I am 21 and have loved all animals since i knew what they were. I've been dying to have a dog ALL my life. But i can not afford one at this point, and i also live in an apartment. Although they allow dogs, they have breed restrictions, and i also feel that an apartment is not adequate for a large breed dog. And i want a large breed dog. I have done my research, and i plan to rescue all of my pets in the future. I also work at a vet clinic, and seeing dogs and puppies everyday helps. But it is killing me not having my own, i want a dog so bad it hurts. Does anyone else feel this way? Or have you felt this way before you got your dog?

I would have enough money to buy a dog, but the vet bills (i know because i work at a vet clinic) are what i'm worried about. I know how much it costs to get their yearly care, and to get fixed and everything else. And i do want an adult dog because puppies are so much work in the beginning, and i enjoy the company of an adult dog. I know i can't at this point get a dog, it is just KILLING me, and i just wanted to know if you felt this way before you were able to get a dog.

I absolutely feel your pain. I've always loved dogs and my Chocolate Lab passed away about a year ago. I've been longing for another big dog ever since. I even broke down at one point and got a small daschund, but she was not a good match with my family and went to another home.

Everyday, I go oneline to Petfinder.com and scout out available dogs. On the weekends, I go to Petsmart to see the available strays. I wish there was a way to stop longing for a pet, but there just itsn't. You love pets - that's who you are. You should probably accept that you're always going to have this empty space in your heart until you find you dog.

I bought my Lab when I was your age. I didn't have the money or the space, but I had to have him. It was the best decision I ever made. He brought so much into my life.

I hope it brings you some comfort to know that there are other people that feel the same as you.

What is it about large breeds that you like? There may be some small dogs with the characteristics you're looking for.

For example, I like big dogs because they tend to be calmer and sweeter than small ones. However, I have come across a number of elderly small dogs that had the personality I prefer.

Also, just a hint: puppies are a pain, especially if you rent your home--they will tear it up! I HIGHLY recommend getting an adult dog instead, at least until you're more experienced.

I've owned Chihuahuas all my life. After I got married, we lived in a Condo, where there were no pets allowed. When we moved into our own house, after almost 12 years, I swore the first thing I was going to do, after I got settled in, was get a Chihuahua. To make a long story short, I got a male first, then three years later, I got a female, and now I have Mom, Dad, and kept all three babies. So Happy! It's got to be so hard for you, wanting a dog so badly, and seeing them every day at work. Have you ever considered a smaller breed?

I understand . But firsst of all i wanna say I want a large breed dog too but if the apratment is too small i wouldnt

Like I almost got a baby Sibe but i thought for a moment " I would love him but the dog would be sooo uncomfortable here "

I am dieing to get a dog and i think im getting one soon ...if only the people from the rescue place would answer my email hehe

I totally get you

Oh and i wanna mention i would not get a dog if you cannot afford him/her . Maybe you think you could fit him in your budget but i would just say to wait untill you really can then you can give them all the things they need! .Plus you will feel much prouder that you can support him the best he can get!:) Good Luckums!!

I have felt that way before then I got to where I didn't want a dog just because with having 3 kids, I knew it would be hard. But recently broke down and got a Lab puppy. She is GREAT!! Then she got lonely so we adopted one of her sisters as well. Now it's twice the fun and love! But truth is, as you know, if you can't afford to buy one, you can't afford to own one. Hopefully soon your financial situation will change and you can get a dog!

I definitely felt this way before we got our 3 dogs from the local humane society. A rescue is the way to go. Also for help on the vet care, you should check into pet insurance. It has saved us a ton on medical care. www.petinsurance.com

Before I used to not have any pets you could hear my dad at night saying "no pets, no pets" it made me sad to not a furry friend but soon after we got to little puppys Spanky and Spotty but there dashunds... if you cant have a big dog than maybe get a dog like a collie or a mediom sized dog. Good Luck!!

Yes, I waited 25 yrs for my first one. Find something else to focus on though, you're being melodramatic. Far worse things happen in this life than not having a dog.
