It depends on where the startup is coming from:
This is how you could do it:
*** NOTE: Do not delete something you do not know what it does. Deleting startups that could be vital to your Windows could crash your machine ***
If your system is Win XP
Start --> Run --> Msconfig
You will get a System Configuration Utility Menu
Click on the tab : Startup
1) It could come from Windows Startup Folder (Location states: Common Startup or Startup)
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup --> remove startups by deleting the
shortcuts there
2) It comes from Windows Registry (Location states: HK** which states for Hive Key **)
You could remove it by Regedit
Find the location and delete it
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
Start --> run --> Regedit
H Key Current user
--> Software
--> Microsoft
---> Windows
--> CurrentVersion
---> Run
Highlight the Startup Item Name (1st column in System Configuration Utility) and right click --> delete
3) If you just want to disable the startup, you could uncheck it inside Startup Tab

I'm assuming you're using Windows.
For programs that run when you start your computer, go to Start>All Programs, or Programs>Startup. Find the program to delete from the startup launch list, right-click it, and choose Delete. Note: This doesn't remove the actual program. Email me if that's what you want to do.
For services that your computer starts, go to Start>Run and type 'msconfig'. Go to the Services tab and uncheck all that you don't want to run at startup. DO NOT DISABLE ANYTHING YOU'RE NOT SURE OF! IT CAN PERMANENTLY DAMAGE YOUR COMPUTER!

How to Disable Windows Startup Programs the Easy Way
A. The hard way is to click Start, Settings, Taskbar and Start Menu, Advanced, etc. and delete or move shortcuts to startup programs. You'll have to do that for Windows 95. For users of Windows 98 and Me, the easy way is to click Start, Run, enter msconfig, choose the Startup tab, and uncheck unwanted startup programs... and restart Windows. You can turn them back on by reversing the process, or selectively execute individual Startup Programs you have turned off by clicking Start, Programs, Disabled Startup Items… You may also want to use msconfig to turn-off load= and run= programs in win.ini and any undesired executables in the DOS autoexec.bat file (Windows 9x, not Me. autoexec.bat entries for Me are transferred to the Windows registry the next time Windows boots). These are usually, but not always, older programs associated with a device such as printer or MODEM. Do should turn off anything that you do not understand, but most are obvious. Windows 98/Me will normally run:
ScanRegistry
TaskMonitor
SystemTray
LoadPowerProfile
On most computers.
For those who are more venturous, there are Windows Registry entries that control Startup programs To access them, click Start, Run, enter regedit, expand the tree by clicking boxes with a + in them to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
and other keys starting with run. Before making any changes I strongly recommend backing-up the registry by following the steps in regedit Help.
Another option, and one which will free-up disk space, is to permanently uninstall unwanted Startup programs with the manufactures uninstall program or in Start, Settings, Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs. One should not attempt to uninstall programs by simply deleting files and folders with the Windows Explorer. That leaves registry entries behind and can cause all sorts of problems.

Some programs offer it in their options.
If the one you want to stop doesn't offer that option then go to Start, Run, type MSCONFIG and hit enter. Select the start up tab and uncheck what you don't want to run. Reboot and just say O.K. when MSCONFIG tells you there have been changes.
