I think they mean they want to mix the fruit and nuts in such a way that they get 7 pounds total and they end up paying $12 for each of the 7 pounds.

If n = pounds of nuts and f = pounds of fruit, and
7 pounds x $12/pound = $84

16n + 3f = 84
n + f = 7 Multiply this equation by 3 to get rid of f's.
3n + 3f = 21 Subtract equations.
13n = 63
n = 4.85 pounts of nuts
f = 7 - 4.85 = 2.15 pounds of fruit

Check:
4.85 * 16 = $77.60
2.15 * 3 = $6.45
Total price (some error due to rounding) $84

As I read it...the cheapest they could put anything together would be all fruit.7 lbs of it would of course be $21.00.Am I missing something?...If this place figures out a way to do it the way I think it's explained here, have them let me know.I want to get in on it.

I am guessing not so much of the 'trick', more of the 'mistake'.

Do you have the original text of the question? Maybe something was lost in the transcription.
