Not just any sin will send you straight to hell. Only mortal sins can do that.
Sin is a deliberate thought, word, deed, or omission contrary to the eternal law of God.
A mortal sin is a grave infraction of the law of God that destroys the divine life in the soul of the sinner (sanctifying grace), constituting a turn away from God. For a sin to be mortal, three conditions must be present: grave matter, full knowledge of the evil of the act, and full consent of the will.
Most of the sins we commit are venial sins. Venial sin is a sin which does not destroy the divine life in the soul, as does mortal sin, though it diminishes and wounds it. Venial sin is the failure to observe necessary moderation, in lesser matters of the moral law, or in grave matters acting without full knowledge or complete consent.
However consistent unrepentant venial sins can slowly destroy your relationship with God and become mortal sin.
People die all the time with venial sins on their conscience and they will go to heaven.
With love in Christ.

The way I see it is, you are already deciding to follow God and give your heart and life to him when you are on the way to confession. Only, God sees your heart.
However, to reduce the risk of that happening, I urge to to confess to God now, not later. You never know how much time you will have if you procrastinate.
Also, realize that you can't ask God to forgive you, then purposely sin thinking, "I can always ask God to forgive me." If you die right before you ask God to forgive you of the latter, I'm not sure how God would look at that, but I don't think he'd take too kindly to it. I'd want to know for sure if I were you that I am right with God.
In a nutshell, if you sincerely ask God to forgive you of your sins, then accidentally sin, and feel very sorry and want God to forgive you, but you die right before you have a chance to say, "God, forgive me," God knows your sincere heart, and you will have a better chance with God.

One man was very religious in his church. He thought he was doing good things. One day he had a heart attack. He found himself standing before the gates of hell. He cried out to Jesus asking why he was there since he was religious? Jesus told him he wasn't born again. Jesus gave him another chance. He woke up in a hospital bed. He died again and the same thing happened. Jesus sent him back to the hospital bed.
Then the man repented and confessed Jesus Christ his Lord and had the heart faith in Jesus atonement for sins and resurrection. He became born again.
To see the kingdom of God you must be born again.
Confess Jesus Christ your Lord, that you were wrong for not believing in Him. Believe in your heart in the Resurrection. God looks at your heart. Jesus loves you and you need to believe it.
The thief on the cross was dieing and He said, "Lord, we are guilty but you are innocent. Please remember me when you enter your Kingdom.". (This thief had heart faith in the sinlessness of Jesus, confessed Jesus Christ Lord & King.) Jesus told the thief, "Today, you will be with me in Paradise.".
As soon as a person is born again, one is spiritually rebirthed. This is how one can see the Kingdom of God. Person is a child of the King, inheriting the Kingdom.
It is written whosoever confesses with their mouth Jesus Christ is Lord and believes in their heart the Resurrection will be saved (everlasting life).

Dear Socratic,
All of us are sinners and under the judgment of eternal damnation (hell). However, the Lord in His great mercy and lovingkindness determined that He was going to save some of these rebels and make them His children. But God's law states that "the wages of sin is death." Therefore, the sin debt of a person must be paid before God can allow anyone to enter His heaven. Because hell is eternal, none of us could go to hell and ever get out. But God (Jesus Christ) could suffer the equivalent of spending eternity in hell and come out because He is God.
However, contrary to what most people believe, they cannot "accept" Jesus to be their Savior. In fact there is nothing a person can do to get themselves saved. The Lord has chosen those (elect) whom He determined to save before the foundation of the world (Ephesians 1:3-6). We do not know who these "elect" are but God does. The Lord also tells us that He is no respector of persons, that is ALL of mankind is on level ground. A female can be saved just as a man can. A mentally deficient person can be saved just as a genius. A poor person can be saved just as a wealthy person.
The environement in which the Lord saves a person is under the hearing of God's word-the Bible. I hope you can see how important it is for the word of God to be spread throughout the world. The Bible says "So then, faith cometh by hearing and hearing by the word of God." FAITH is a synonym for the Lord Jesus Christ. So then, Christ cometh by hearing and hearing by the word of God. Reading the Bible will not ensure a person will be saved, but if God has elected that person to be saved, it will happen under the hearing of the word.

You answered your own question, if you hadn't repented then you are still steeped in the guilt of your sins. What is the outcome of dying without being forgiven?

"Except a man be born again of the water and Spirit, he will not enter into the Kingdom". So...the answer is evident. You have to repent to enter Heaven. I will remember you always in my prayer.

If your on your way to confession ( A Catholic I presume), and you have learned that God is all knowing and all loving and forgiving, don't you think he already knew your intent? Just make sure your sincere because He/She would know that too.

You bet. You would probably still go to hell, even if you made it to confession.
