I think that is a very good question and you can apply it to differences in general. I used to run a therapy group and we talked about all kinds of interesting things. One time the group members talked about what it would really be like for them personally if the world was populated with people who looked exactly like them - everybody looked exactly alike. No one, when they thought about it, wanted everyone to be just like themselves. I think people have problems with differences when they feel afraid and/or vulnerable. You hit the nail on the head when you said "since most here are secure in their beliefs ... speaking to others about their beliefs does not matter". If you are comfortable with your beliefs you can accept that others have different ones. I have noticed that people with very dogmatic religious beliefs tend to be the least tolerant of others' differences. That seems to be the case in the situation you are describing. Atheists generally aren't trying to change anyone else's mind - they are just refusing to let you change their's. There are many religions that do not have as part of their basic foundation the compulsion to "spread the word". They believe that the way they live their lives is their testimony of their beliefs. Some religions are quiet and private. There are just a particular bunch of religious folks (you know who you are!) that are so distracted by the entire concept of atheism that it makes their heads spin. And it's a shame because they tend to react and behave in very un-(their religion) types of ways, as a result.

I don't know why people bother to argue about religion. You are right, most people ARE secure in their beliefs and set in their ways. Religion is supposed to be a good thing, yet it is destroying our planet by starting arguments, inciting wars and fueling hatred. I think that most people that argue about anything on the internet are just self-righteous and feel the need to prove themselves right, even if it is behind the screen of a computer.
I am an atheist, by the way. I have no reason to ever argue however, because I believe that everyone needs to believe something different to find inner peace. They should find out what it is on their own, and not by the force of others.

Just because atheists dont believe in a religion doesnt mean they dont have beliefs, morals, feelings, etc. I get tired of people thinking all atheists are like empty people who care about nothing. They are just like any other people but with a different view.

I completely agree with you about the need to debate and discuss with people of different beliefs and values. I am an agnostic, but I do love a good debate on religion or philosophy and will take whichever side is more hated or more unpopular atleast.

MUCH of what is posted is here is not for learning, but for antagonism. Face it.
It is rare to find a question where someone is legitimately seeking for help, or answers. Many use this forum to state their own beliefs, or to put down those of another faith.
I admit, I fall into it. If you go back & look at my answers, you can see my manic-depressive responses! First I'm criticizing, then I'm sympathizing.

With all due honesty and respect I thought it was the atheists that were secure in their non-belief. So, no, I don't think they are needed. I thought THEY didn't want to hear about others beliefs.

you don't have to be religous to be spiritual. Do you even know what it means.
It is fun that is why I come here. I am firm in what I know. Most of your relligious people are so insecure it is entertainment for me. I am glad I have to use my mind to post on here and not cut and past from bible .com or the book.com as my foundation to your opposition to my choice to be free!
Keep it coming. Live for today. Live for yourself. Care for yourself. Do good for others when you can.
Not back stab and be hateful!

As an agnostic, I normally don't get on with atheists (we are more orthodox and fundemental nonbelievers).
The only reason that I answered is that I'd like to vote your avatar as pic of the day. It's brilliant, with that rainbow and all that.

True, they do make life a little more interesting. I do wonder how many of these self professed atheists are really pulling our leg. I sure hope the majority of these people aren't true atheists but maybe they're hopeing to be convinced otherwise.

I think you are confusing the term Atheist to mean not believing in anything. Buddhism and Hinduism are both religious, but they are Atheistic religions because there is no monotheistic God, only Mind.
