I have a 99 Auto Excel, Twin cam. In the past few weeks on 4 occasions I have gone to start my car and the battery is dead, hence I have had to get someone to jumpstart me. I have had one person tell me it's a problem with the alternator and another telling me it's the battery. I have not replaced the battery since I bought the car in Oct 05 and don't know how long the person before had it? Can anyone assist a clueless blonde?

if the car is not starting then the battery is bad.....the alternator powers the car when it has already started........the alternator really cant make up for a bad battery...........the alternator only runs when the engine is......so if the car isnt starting then the battery is probably either bad or need a charge.......u can go to walmart and get a free battery charge or a diagnosis. hope it helps

Hi,
The very first thing to check on any Hyundai is that the battery cables are tight to the battery terminal. Hyundai's have top post connections but if you have changed the battery, it is possible that the connectors are too big for the posts.
The easiest way to determine whether or not it is the battery or the alternator is to go to an automotive parts store - if in Canada, Canadian Tire - and ask them to load test the battery. This tells you if your battery is holding the charge and whether it drops signifigantly when there is a draw on it.
The other option, ask a mechanic to test the charging of the battery - simple 5 minutes or less test with a volt meter. If the reading is between 12-14.4 with the car running, the alternator is fine, and now you should have the battery tested and replaced if need be.

Before paying someone, ensure that all of your connections are tight on the battery and the alternator. The battery test should be free and the alternator test at an independant mechanic should be no more than $10-20.

Hyundai Excel Alternator

Do not disconnect the battery while the engine is running, you will fry the diodes in the alternator.Get a cheap multimeter from an auto parts store, set it to d.c. volts and put the leads on the battery terminals red on red and black on black. The static voltage should be 12 to12.5 volts,if it is below 11 volts ,the battery is discharged.Putting a charge on it may solve that problem or the battery may have a dead cell.If the static voltage check has been done,do a dynamic test.Start the car and test the voltage as before. It should be between 13.5 and 14.5 volts. If the static voltage is okay and the dynamic voltage is not, then you have a problem in the charging system. That could be a loose wire, dirty terminals,a loose drive belt or a bad alternator to name some of the possibilities.I hope that this information empowers you to make an informed choice whether you decide to do it yourself or to get it done professionally.

Get them both tested. A weak battery could cause this, as could an alternator that is not recharging the battery as you drive. You might even have a parasytic draw (something using the power with the car turned off, weakening the battery). For about 35 dollars you can find out for sure, and save money on guessing. Good luck.

I'm gonna bet it is the battery. If the alternator was bad, it probably wouldnt run long after you get jumped and the accessories such as a/c or lights wouldn't work properly, but while the car is running the alternator keeps all these things going. But you could have something left on that is killing the battery, like a glove compartment light, or trunk light, or light under the hood. check this first

Take it to get tested.. Most auto parts store will test this for you for free. Try Autozone.. Old fashion test.. Remove positive from battery once car is on.. If car turns off, then its the alternator,.,.

could be either, only a test will make sure. Take it to a dealer or mechanic and they can help you. Oh, and while you ARE running the car, don't run any "extras" that you don't need that may drain the battery more, like the A/C, stereo, et cetera.
