Ok my son is 18 months old and all he can say right now is mama, dada, sometimes bear and cookie. So we took him to his 18 month check up and my doc freaks b/c he can't say atleast 10 words. My son understands everything we say to him. I look at him and tell him to go get his water on the table and he will go get it and bring it back. He hears us, but the doc was saying that he might not be able to hear so good and suggested and hearing test. For what? He listens and responds. He can also do things that most 2 year olds can't.. the only thing wrong is he isn't talking yet. Should this be a problem. I mean he always points at what he wants and I tell him what it is and repeat it. I read to him, I talk to him all day long about what I'm doing what i need to do, and when we are out I am always talking to him. He just isn't speaking yet. Anyone else with this problem? And should I be worried? even though I feel that my son will talk when he wants to. I don't feel like he should be forced.

You are correct...and SHAME on that doctor for freaking you out!! Your son will be just fine...like you said, he listens and responds just fine.
Geesh...it really pisses me off when doctors (or other people, for that matter) make parents so worried over nothing.
Just keep doing what you're doing and I'm sure he will be just fine. You're doing a great job!

I have been a mom for 27 years to 4 kids and I have been a licensed daycare provider in my home for 20 years. So, I have been around children a long time. All children develop language skills at different ages. Each child is different. My own middle daughter talked very early and had a vocabulary of about 10 words by the time she was 12 months and could put 2 words together when she was 14 months ("Be right back" was her first sentence at 16 months). I have a little girl I am caring for right now who didn't speak any words at all until she was about 20 months and then it was just "mama" and "dada". She started really talking about 3 years old and I don't think she's stopped since! She's 5 now and in kindergarten and talks all the time. One of my nephews was also a late talker, but understood everything you said to him. As long as you are reading to him, talking to him, and he can understand what you say to him, I personally wouldn't be concerned about it. If he had hearing problems you would notice him not making eye contact when you talk to him, not being startled when there is a loud noise, or not turning around when his back his to you and you call his name. My cousin has 2 deaf sons. The oldest was diagnoised when he was about your son's age and these were the things they noticed that led to him being tested. I am willing to think that by the time your son goes to his 2 year check up he will be saying a lot of words. It sounds like you are doing all the right things and your son will develop his languge skills when he is ready.

Kids learn to talk on different times. My bro talked when he was a about 8 months. Some kids dont even talk until they are 2 years old. Say easy words to him and he might repeat. Dont get worried.

My neighbours two sons were late talkers. One didnt start till four and the other at three. Everybody thought there was something wrong with them but they turned out to be just fine and are now sturdy normal teens. Dont worry. Some kids are just late talkers. Maybe it runs in the family.

Mine says 5 words at 7 months. She's a little weird, I know. But so what if he isn't talking much? Some people are thinkers rather than doers :-)
