It's hard to really argue with the people who say Saratoga, and it is every bit as awe-inspiring as they say. I got to Keeneland once, and it is also fabulous.
However, I can't say that either compares to the feeling of walking out into the sunlight high up in the grandstand of Belmont Park and looking down at the track for the first time.
Belmont is 1 1/2 miles around, bigger than any other dirt track in the world. If you are used to the bullring (1/2 mile) or even the mile tracks, you will be blown away the first time you actually see Belmont.
I saw Cigar run there, in his last victory ('96 Woodward), and I couldn't help picturing the ghost of Big Red galloping out that last half mile of the '73 Belmont.

Another vote for Saratoga. It is the greatest US track hands down. The quality of racing has suffered slightly since the meet has been extended, but the list of major stakes run in the month of August is still impressive. Easily as many graded stakes as most tracks run in 3+ months. And the ambiance is magical. Go in the morning for breakfast or if you are lucky watch the sun rise over the Oklahoma training track.

Saratoga! My idea of heaven on earth. You can see the finest horses in the country, or celebrity watch in the Grandstands. I used to see Andy Rooney every opening day, and when he was still alive John Spencer (West Wing) was there a lot. One of the greatest tracks for a family outting, picnic tables are provided and go fast.
Keeneland is steeped in tradition as is Churchill, I like Keeneland better . It just seems more "genteel" as the Southerners say. Beautiful country surrounds the track. They filmed the movie "Dreamer" there.

Churchill Downs no doubt as it runs deep with tradition in Thoroughbred racing. I would say Prairie Meadows, in Altoona, IA is the nicest track I've worked at in the mid-west. I love racing there every summer. But I also work with Quarter Horses as well as Thoroughbreds.

Keeneland is great!!
I can't believe so many people answered Churchill, that place is a dump, it's in the middle of the ghetto!!
I've never been but I here Saratoga is the only track that comes close to Keeneland in history and atmosphere.

It runs with the seasons. I like Santa Anita in the winter, Belmont in the summer and fall, and Aqueduct in the spring. I have been to many and Belmont is my favorite. My worst is Churchill Downs. What a dump. Dirtiest track I have been to.
