If your talking about a house wall, then it depends on whether you mean inside or external, internal is usually 4-6 inches or there abouts (guestimate) exterior walls are usually cavity walls, two walls together with about one bricks worth of space between.

Hope this helps

Typically 2x4 is 4 9/16s 2x6 is 6 9/16. Masonary walls can vary greatly depending on how the interior and exterior is finished. This is also true for wood construction to some degree. You really need to give us a little more infornation for an exact number.

External cavity wall is 275 - 300 mm
External Solid Brick wall is 215mm
Internal wall is 100mm

All measurements exclude plaster finishes (about 10 - 25 mm)
