Every time I swallow I get a sharp pain at the base of my sternum. It doesn't hurt when I breathe softly, but I can feel it if I bend over backwards. It has been like this for three days and shows no signs of easing. What could it be?

It could be anything from a pulled muscle, bending over backwards could cause it. It could be a hernia, it could be a digestive thing maybe try some maalox or another antacid that might help. Try advil and if it eases it it is probably a muscle. Then it might take a few weeks to heal with medication and rest, not bending over backwards. If not go see a Dr. Good luck.

looks like acid reflux. Do you exercise regularly??? Do you sit for long stretch of time without moving, standing up walk for 5 or 10 minutes??? Seems like you need stretching exercise once in a while whilest you sit at the desk ( assuming that's what you were doing when this happened ) Certainly, more environmental description will help to clarify your situation.

I'm a nurse. Any chest pain could be life threatening, see a doctor. It sounds like possible heart trouble.
