My parents and I have been having an argument this week about car insurance, so I hope someone can answer my question.
I've had my learner's permit for three weeks, and I've been practicing mainly with my mom's car. Then, I heard from someone that learners need their own insurance. I asked my parents, and they said that since I'm driving their cars, I am covered as long as they sit next to me. At the same times, my friends are adamant that even the learner needs his own insurance. Who's right? And can someone please site sources so I can show my parents? Our insurer is Farmers Insurance.

Whatever replies you get here the only REAL answer would be to get your mother to phone Farmers insurance, identify herself, produce her policy details and for her to ask the same question to the guy that works there, then you will know for sure, done.

Any other way is total rubbish.

Your parents are right. Learners are covered by the policy as long as they have a legitimate learners permit. They are not fully licensed drivers and do not have their own vehicle to insure yet, so they cannot be on an insurance policy in most states.

Insurance follows the vehicle, not the person driving it. Call your parents Farmers Agent to be certain.

I am sure you do need your own but it also depends on what state you live in and what her policy covers. Call her insurance agent and ask to get the details.
