We have been giving our parakeets some mites and lice spray to help him, and it has been working...but he is still itching. There are a lot of bald spots on his body and there is no nasal or eye discharge. Is he sick, and does he need a vet?

Take the little guy to the vet. He may just be molting but if you're unsure, it's better to get a trained opinion.

Continue to use the spray as directions tell you to do. Also make sure your clean the cage and washing and then spray. Place your birds/bird in another cage until the regualar cage is clean. Sounds like your bird has been seriously effected by mites. Mites go to the eyes of the birds for liquids and you need to carefully, use a cloth and wipe around the eyes. If he/she doesn't improve, then take it to a Vet. Good Luck.

Yes, you should take him to the vet if he is itching, but he could be losing feathers due to stress. The pet store does sell these things that you can clip onto the cage to keep bugs away, though.

Sounds to me like he/she is stressing about something. It might be pulling out it's feathers. Did you change the setting of his/her perch or something did you move the cage to a different part of the house? You should really take it to a vet. Sounds like it's stressing about some thing..........

he could benefit from an avian vet. it could be a dietary issue, hormonal or psychological. sometimes the spray we use to help actually makes the problem worse! ask your vet to help you find a compounding pharmacy that can make just what you need, good luck!

Birds do this b/c they are bored. Some commit suicide this way. Anywho, buy some toys or entertainment for the bird and it should stop, i.e. buy another bird, buy some birdsong CD's, or buy some kind of toy that can occupy the bird's attention for hours on end.
