Wow...

Go to www.bullshido.com and ask this question lol.

I say take Judo.

Of the two Judo is the only you in which you can practice against a real and resisting opponent. You will truly learn what techniques work and which ones do not. You will learn more practical application in one semester of Judo than you would learn in a whole year of Karate.

Karate you will practice forms, (might be lucky enough to point spar) and will develop an unrealistic ideaology of how to defend yourself. (Depending on style of course). You will practice moves in the air, and on a cooperative opponent. If you are fortunate enough to spar it will be light contact probably with no blows to the head allowed. You won't be able to practice the things you learn at full speed, therefore you will never have these techniques truly tested or known. They will only be assumed.

Do you know what really happens when you try to strike a man in his throat, or block a looping punch with a forearm block? No, you don't have some truly trying to hit you and not be hit by you.

In Judo, within a short amount of time you will be doing randori and having a chance to truly test out the techniques you learned agaist someone who is trying to do the same thing to you.

As far as an aerobic workout? Judo will get you far more winded than Karate will because you will be using more muscles and going against heavier resistance than standing in stance and punching at the air.

Cons of Judo is that you will not be punching or kicking. But there are far better places on how to do that effectively and correctly (like a boxing or kickboxing gym) than a Karate class.

Karate has it's uses, and is great for a foundation. Certain styles especially. But it lacks practicing with aliveness, and is very one dimensional.

In Judo you learn how to grapple standing up, and on the ground. While you do miss the range of combat with striking, you get to cover everything else, and you get to practice with a fully resisting individual.

It will open your eyes as to what training is actually really effective.

My personal preference would be judo, anyone can do it effectively and because it is regulated by international standards and must be a registered judo club to be legitimate then quality is rarely a major issue. Karate on the other hand becomes less effective yearly. If you were living in japan, i would say definetly try out each of the martial arts and see which one suited your fancy. If you are looking to kick ***, neither of these martial arts would be suited to you, judo is highly defensive towards strikes and undertaught in my opinion. Karate is not much better anymore, mainly because nobody is going to attack you with karate technique, and karate technique is what you are taught to defend against, you'll get knocked out. I've heard karate referred to as "useful as bowling" by several people that cross trained into different martial arts, before mma got big and clubs opened up specifically for that purpose. i do disagree with him that karate is useless, it has it's purposes, but think of what you want the martial art for, competition, fitness, flashy techniques, self defence, or some other reason.

the are no martial arts that are better than others. they all achieve what they believe is best, so they are all the best.

it depends what type of martial art you want to study and why.

karate is a broad term so it's hard to say what the advantages are, but karate is a striking (kicking, punching, chopping, closer to whats in movies and such) generally speaking if it's a japanese style, it will be very hard and focus a lot on your own strength, if it okinawan (which is what i study) there will be more emphasis on speed and your own body mechanics (what works best for your body). you will risk a few bumps and bruises and you have have to learn to take a punch.

judo is a wonderful art, but it is mostly grappling and not as intense of a "workout" as karate which is much more areobic. you will be thrown around a lot and will get a lot of bruises at first. you will have to learn how to break fall.

Each seperate martial art has weaknesses and strengths, so there is not one ultimate fighting style that can kick all the other styles' asses; martial arts doesn't work that way. It's all a system of checks and balances like in our own government; style A overpowers style B but is weak against style C, that sort of thing. If you are looking for a style that includes lots of punching, kicking, and blocking techniques, then karate is the style for you. If it is Shotokan Karate-do, then defenitely go for it, I have over 5 years experience in that style and am truly happy with it. If you are more into grappling moves(similar to traditional wrestling) that allow the smallest man to take down the largest opponent easily, then judo is the style for you. My cousin is a gold medalist in Iran national Judo competition(they are hardcore when it comes to martial arts) and I remember him telling me that its a very tough style to embrace at first, but with hard practice and dedication you can succeed at it. good luck!

Well if you can take both I would do that. But if you have only one choice. Then you have to compare the art versus your capabilities and needs.

A very small person or not strong will have a harder time with Judo doing the flips off people much heavier than them.

Which kind of karate is it?

Basically in the end it comes down to the teacher and your capability to learn from them. Maybe try each and stick with the one you like best.

Both of these are fine Martial Arts. Please know that you need to find out which one interests you the most then find a class near you. If you find interest in what you study you will find that you skill will greatly improve.

i prefer judo because it incapacitates your enemy with out seriously injuring them, judo is all about flipping people and getting them off balence etc. Karate is about incapacitating them with pain. tai kwan do is nice also its kinda inbetween and its helps u focus ur energy like yoga too.

both are great, so go with the best teacher. go in to each class and watch, or participate. speak with the other students and the sensei, then decide.
