This is NOT a time to take drugs, though you may well think so. Try hot baths, melatonin is a natural substance which works to put your body in synch with darktime being sleeptime. You can take 3mg freely 30 mins b4 bedtime. Mostly get your disturbing thoughts on paper long before you try to sleep. Clear your mind of negatives and imagine yourself as being fully capable of all you need to be and do, which you ARE! Good luck and night night!

If this has gone on for more than a week, see your doctor right away. Not being able to sleep can be a sign of depression, mania, thyroid problems and a whole lot of other things. It isn't just stress.

If it has only been a day or so, be sure to

drink clear water

exercise

take no caffeine

Eat at least 3 servings of fruit and 3 servings of vegetables each day

Another trick is to lie in bed and count backwards from 100. If you lose track, start over at 100 again. REpeat until you fall asleep or a good half hour has passed. Then try something else.

Klonopin can be addictive, and habit forming, leading for a need to increase dosages. I would ask your doctor for a short term sleeping pill such as ambien or any of the new ones with less habit forming potential, and less side effects. One of the biggest exacerbations of depression and the inability to deal with stress is inadequate sleep. So I do believe that you should seek some temporary help. If you choose to self treat with herbal remedies, you need to make sure that they do not interact with any prescribed medications that you are taking. After you have medicine on board and are able to get a good nights rest, then you need to formulate a plan and map out how you are going to deal with your personal problems. Part of this plan can include a therapist or psychiatrist.

I would avoid conventional sleeping pills since they can be habit forming and have side effects.

The best thing to use would be Benadryl. It is an allergy medicine but we often use it in the hospital where I work as a sleep aid. The only side effect you may notice, and many people do not, is a slight dry mouth the next day.

You can also try a product Tylenol makes called "Simply Sleep" which contains the same ingredients as Benadryl.

Just make sure either product doesn't interact with any medications you are already taking. You can check with your pharmacy to be sure.

Sorry to hear that you are having problems. : ( I have trouble sleeping too - too many thoughts floating around in my head! Anyway, I used to take Tylenol PM, but that would make me feel groggy in the morning. So, I now take Melatonin and Valerian root pills, and neither one has that hang-over effect. You can find both at Walmart or just about any vitamin shop or drug store. You may have to experiment with the dosage to find what will work best for you. Hope it helps!

Go to the doctor and ask him to prescribe something to sleep. Do this as soon as you can, because you could spiral down into a depression and anxiety. I speak from experience.
