It depends on your situation. You don't mention if you are married or single, or if you have any children. You also don't mention if you contribute to a retirement plan at work or if any of your benefits are taken out pretax. That makes it hard to calculate.

You can start by looking up Publication 15 from the IRS website and look for a similar publication on the California tax department website. Then do your own calculations.

Doesn't matter which state... you are just barely above the poverty line. Do you want to stay there. ??? You should get a nice refund, but that is so short lived. But... why are you making so little money?? Really, you cannot live on this. Can you further your education... night school, community college.??? I assume you only have a high school diploma. I applaud you for that, if that is the case, but really.. you need to be making at least 45,000 a year to live a half way decent life. Start looking at what you can do differently. Ask questions... go on-line for job opportunities... please don't settle for so little.
