Should I leave the airport and have a look around - is there anything near the airport? Will traffic make any trip a waste of time? I just need somewhere other than the airport to hangout from late morning to late evening. Any suggestions ?

I don't think that I would risk leaving the airport-you'll have to deal with going back through security, potential traffic tie-ups, etc and you don't want to get stuck there by missing your flight.

Try taking some work with you that you have been putting off-you'll either get it done because you can't find anything else to preoccupy your time OR you'll find other things that are more interesting to pass the time you're stuck waiting. Either way it's a win-win situation.

Unfortunately LAX isn't in the most convenient locations. I don't think there is much to do right nearby, and traffic can be a huge issue. You'd probably lose at least an hour if you rent a car, it would take at least an hour to get anywhere, an hour to get back, and probably 1.5 hours at the airport before your flight leaving you with possibly 7 hours to hang out. Feasibly, you probably could get to the beach for a while; it would depend what your bringing and where you're coming from (would you be dressed for LA weather?). You may even have time to go to the Chinese Maan Theater (where all the handprints areof all the famous actors) and Hollywood, but you'd definately need a car. Public Transportation is almost nonexistent. Although if you do venture out, make sure you add plenty of extra time to account for traffic because there is almost always an accident on the freeway.

We'll I think it depends on the time of the layover, if it is at night time I say get a hotel near the airport because most likely every store in the airport will be closed and you will need some place to rest. If the layover is during the day, I say rent a locker to put your stuff in, take plenty of books and music and wonder around the airport until your departure time.

12 hours is a VERY long time ... if it were me, I would rent a car and drive around the area. I know that's not for everyone - so you might look into a day room at the Hacienda or the Motel 6 ... might cost you $50 or $60 - but it sure beats waiting around LAX. You can grab a nap and a shower, watch some TV, and head out to your next flight (which must be a redeye) well rested.

If you can check in and drop your bags off than make sure to do that first! My husband and I ended up stuck at LAX for about eight hours once and we couldn't really do anything because the airline counter that we needed was closed for six of those hours. Once you drop your bags off you can do anything you want! There was a restaurant across the street when we went through that looked amazing!! (i don't remember its name, but it looked cool) We never got to eat there though, because after we got our bags checked the restaurant was already closing for the night and we still had to go through customs. Best of luck, and don't forget to bring a book.
