When I poke them, they go in easily, but they stop coming up right when they become flush with the casing. I need them up about 2 mm from the casing.

Try using some "Canned Air". There may be some gunk on them. If that doesn't work, I would take it to a camera store. They should have a cleaner that is safe to use on a camera. DO NOT USE WD-40, it travels to areas that you don't want it to. Like the glass. Another trick. Use the point of a pencil to push the contacts in with. Then lightly run the point around the cylinder that the contact rides in. The graphite should lubricate the contact. Good Luck.
