Shorebirds are generally defined as birds who are sandpipers, plovers, stilts, oystercatchers and avocets. They are called shorebirds because they tend to feed along shorelines. Most people associate them with the ocean side, but they do live and breed inland, also. There are many species of these birds around the world. When birders refer to this group they do not include gulls, herons, ibis or other wading birds.
