I was pulled over for driving with a suspended drivers license a couple weeks ago. I did get a ticket for driving with an expired inspection ticket and paid it late. The officer informed me that since I paid it late I will have to appear in court and face the judge. he seemed pretty cool about it, telling me that because it was suspended for paying an inspection ticket late that its not a big deal and the judge will likely charge me a fine and get me off the hook. I didn't know about the suspension..obviously if I had known i would have made alternate transportatioin arrangements and had my license fixed. Question is, what should I do?!?!?

The officer also let me drive home also. I went to the DMV, paid the required fees and got my license back with no problem.

You go to court, you be polite, and you tell the Judge you hadn't received a notice that your license was suspended and as you said you would have made other arrangements.

Most likely you will have a fine and have to pay a reinstatement fee to get your license back but that should be it.

You need to get an attorney before you go to court. Be aware that in some states that DWLS can land you in jail. I do not know what state you are in but I have seen people show up in court (County Courts at Law) with a driving while license suspended charge and even though they paid the fine, court costs, reinstatement fees, etc, there was a state imposed jail time part of all "pleas" to DWLS ! The jail time could not be waived by the Judge either because it was statutory law.

First, do not take the officer's word for it. If it were no big deal you would be able to pay and not go to court.

Think about this... it is likely that you are being charged with a crime.

Now, bring your documents to a criminal lawyer and buy an hour of their time. Show them the documents and tell your story.
