i wish there was a test that could detect a chemical imbalance. it would be better than the trial and error method that psychiatrists are forced to use to diagnose the problem now. there is no blood test, scan, or x-ray that can determine the chemical imbalance. the dr must diagnose by listening to the patient's symptoms and prescribing different meds until one or a combonation is found to control the pts symptoms. it is very difficult to control most chemical imbalances without the use of psychogenic drugs. i believe that the drugs are out there and if you have a problem you should use the necessary meds to help the problem. chemical imbalances are like diabetes: the body lacks a certain elemant that makes it work correctly and therefore that element must come from anoutside source--medications. Good luck!!!

If you go to a doctor asking about a chemical imbalance, expect to be put onto antidepressants or other drugs that you truly don't need. These drugs don't cure anything. They simply mask the symptoms.

When you become tolerant to the drug and have to be taken off or switched to another, your original problem returns magnified by withdrawal. Of course the doctor will simply tell you that you've gotten worse and give you more drugs thus perpetuating the situation.

I strongly recommend this book: "Your Drug May Be Your Problem: How and Why to Stop Taking Psychiatric Medications" by Peter R. Breggin, M.D.

Even if you're not on anything yet, this would give you a good idea of why you don't want to be on anything in the future.

This doesn't mean you shouldn't seek treatment. There are counselors and psychologists out there that actually believe that therapy is the way to go. They're not just pill dispensers.

My disclaimer: If you or anyone you know is suicidally depressed, you need to do whatever you need to do in order to be safe.

It may depend on the chemical, but I don't believe it is possible to have any of them checked. At least not chemically. A doctor will diagnose you based on your symptoms and then prescribe you a medicine. If the medicine helps, then it might mean that the particular chemicals were high/low. It's a trial an error process, not something that can be scientifically proven.

At least that's the way I understand it.

A psychiatrist can perform that type of testing with or a neurologist with scanning of the brain. I am not sure of the price, but most insurances should cover it. I'd imagine that it's pretty expensive.
Anyhow, you can pretty much tell if you have a chemical imbalance through check lists. There are certain feelings that you may have that you wouldnt if you were balanced.

You grab the head with both hands and you shake it while saying the three magic words,"Suzuki, Baklava, Souvlaki" then you close your eyes and you wait for the chemical of in-balance to make its appearance. Once this happens, you take six drops of the sample of chemical in-balance and you spike with them a gin and tonic drink, if the drink turns blue, the chemical in-balance exists in high dosage, if it turns yellow, the chemical in-balance is of a light dosage, but if it turns red, run for your life.
I hope that I have helped you and all Londoners who seek to measure the chemical in-balance in the head. Ta, and bye, bye to you.

Apology:

Reading the answers of others, I concluded that your question deals with a serious problem. I took it as a joke and that is why I answered in the frivolous way that I did, please accept my apologies.
You have to see a doctor if you haven't already done so. I wish you well, God bless.

borrow a trickle charger from some gearhead and set it up in your bedroom clip the positive line to your right ear lobe and the negative line to your left ear lobe. be seated and set it on low then flip the on switch. (don't forget to plug in the trickle charger). if there is a chemical imbalance you will clear it up in an hour or two. just hook up your ipod or watch tv will you get that brain retuned. for real heavy people you might have to put the trickle charger on med or high. i always use low and do this on an bi-annual basis. everybody mentions that i am a very level headed and normal guy. i wouldn't hurt a fly.
