once in a while they will be ok, than they still have accidents.

They should have been trained long ago. Are the neutered? Intact dogs often "mark" their territory. Go to the library and get a good book on how to house train dogs.

To housebreak a dog directly, follow a simple set of rules. The puppy must be allowed frequent access to the outdoors, and given a change to urinate and defecate before being brought back inside. Once inside, you have two options. One is to restrict the puppy to a certain place in the house, such as the kitchen, while you keep a close eye on it. The other is to place the puppy in a comfortable but enclosed living and sleeping ... crate, until you can supervise its activities. In either case, the puppy will be limited to a small area in which to play and sleep, an area that it will naturally be reluctant to soil.

When accidents happen, mildly chastise the puppy and immediately take it to a familiar outdoor place. Young puppies need to eliminate often, so be sure to go outside frequently in the early days--right after each feeding and any time you suspect there's a need. The necessary outings will eventually be reduced, but control develops slowly.

I have a West Highland White Terrier too, mine is 9 months old and still potty's in places, but don't worry I have the answer!! Never EVER use puppy pads, they eventually go on the carpet. When they do go potty in the house take them DIRECTLY outside with a leash, of course. Tell them to potty outside and take them to the same spot outside every time, eventually when they get bigger they'll go anywhere you want them to. DO NOT let him watch you clean up the potty when the "accident" is inside, i read that they enjoy watching you clean it up so take them out of sight. Use urine/poop cleaning spray from a pet store. Get a kennel and when they do not go outside when you take them then put them into the kennel and they'll learn that they'll get less freedom when not going potty outside, when they do go potty and while they are say, " Good potty" and praise often when they do. Remember when they start sniffing in circles which is what mine does, take it outside before they start going o the bathroom. It took mine about a month or two to learn they go outside for potty and will be able to hold it longer. Mine sits by the door when wanting to go outside. If your door to outside is farther away, hang bells on the door knob and when you get ready to take them out say " Ring" and put their paw on the bell, make sure the bells are long enough for him to reach, it'll work eventually!!
