Years ago, I used to go to 12-step (SAA) meetings for addiction to Playboy-type videos. I tried a few different groups, and all of them included a lot of garbage that was worse than useless to me. Things like mislead tough love, obvious recovery addiction on the part of some of the leaders of the groups, incorrect attributions and a demand that I find a higher power all drove me away from the program. My sex addiction is a non-issue now, but I'm feeling dependent on alcohol. I may need to get help with my drinking, but I'm not open to many of the views and approaches of 12-step programs and what I've seen with therapists (Dr. Drew) that specialize in addiction. Are there alternative approaches, or do I need to shop carefully?

All meeting are different! Try going to some AA meetings and explore. AA is different from a lot of the branch type meetings like SAA. Go to an AA meeting and tell them how you feel about 12 step meetings. Don't give up until you have tried at least three different AA meetings!

In order to break away from any type of addiction you have to do 2 things. The first is you have to commit to the idea of changing your behavior and secondly, you have to begin viewing the behavior differently.

It is your relationship to the item(s) that you are addicted to that allow you to continue to give into the pressure of looking at the playboy type of videos. When you begin to understand that it's unhealthy and it is not acceptable material for you to look at all the time, then any program with support will be able to successfully help you.

Any program that would require me to surrender myself to a higher power wouldn't work for me since I don't believe in a higher power (at least not a spiritual one).

Perhaps the best thing for you would be a good old fashion intervention. You might respond better if your friends and family tried talking some sense into you, instead of taking advice from strangers.
