If you are female, it is natural to have a little extra around the middle. Genetics play a HUGE role in how your body is. Trust me on this one. The amount of exercise plays a role as well including diet and the types of beverages. If you drink beer, don't do it. If you do drink alcohol, try to stick to rum. Low salt is good for you too. You also want to try to drink plenty of water. Try to cut out sodas and as much sugar as you can. Don't bother with the diet sodas either, the real stuff is better for you than the fake stuff. Exercise, exercise, exercise. Cardio is great and try to do some crunches instead of sit-ups. Try laying down and lift and lower your legs. When you bring them down, hold your legs before reaching the ground and hold for a count of five. Repetition is key here. You don't want to do a zillion crunches either. Start off slowly because if you're not used to exercising, the next day you will be in lots of pain and will be discouraged to do it again. Also, if you are female, your tummy will fluctuate depending on the time of the month. The best thing to do is to cut out as much salt before. It is tempting because your body craves it, just give your body some water. Sorry so long winded, but it is a complex question because there are so many variables and every body is different. What works for you may not work for someone else. Stick to what works for you. Good luck.

Cardiovascular exercise is the key to shedding unwanted fat.
You can't spot reduce, meaning you can't choose where your body will burn fat. Cardiovascular exercise of any kind is what it takes to shed fat. The more you do, the more you shed. You just have to keep doing it until the abdominal region loses its share. In the meantime, strengthening your abdominal area by doing crunches, etc., will make your abs look much firmer once the fat is gone.

You should try doing crunches, and things that are meant to tone your midsection. Make sure you eat breakfast each morning to jump start your metabolism.
