Wash and Treat After you remove the bandage, you will want to wash your tattoo. Use lukewarm water and antibacterial soap to gently wash away any ointment and to completely clean the area. Do not use a washcloth or anything abrasive. Your hand is your best tool in this case.
Then pat (do not rub) the area firmly with a CLEAN towel or paper towel to get it completely dry. Follow with a very light application of ointment. Bacitracin would be the first choice in ointments, but if you don't have any, A&D vitamin enriched ointment (medical grade - not the kind used for diaper rash) is also acceptable. **Do not use Neosporin. This is a wonderful product for cuts and scrapes, but not for tattoos. Some can have an allergic reaction to the Neosporin, which causes little red bumps. When the bumps go away, so does the ink, and you end up with a polka-dotted tattoo.**
Continue this procedure at least twice a day for two or three days. After that, continue to keep it clean, but you can use lotion (I used Curel) when needed instead of ointment, to keep the skin soft.
I would suggest that you contact the tattoo artist that you got your tattoo from, and ask if there is a specific ointment or lotion that he carries, or would recommend.
Lastly....the reason that I suggest that you contact the artist is that there might be some interaction due to the inks that he/she used in your design. After spending your money, you want to have this tattoo's colors and design to stay, and if you use the wrong lotion, you might ruin the design.

I would say the best place to get lotion for the healing of a tattoo is at an actual tattoo shop. TattooGoo or H2Ocean are popular ones. These are formulated specifically for that purpose. The tattoo artist should also have gone over a post tattoo procedure with you. This is very important as a tattoo is actually an invasive procedure and can result in some bad infections.

If it's a brand new tat and it's still healing try Tattoo Goo. It's all natural and will keep the moisture in. It will keep the tattoo from getting dry and irritated. You can find it at any tattoo shop or on their website.
Hope this helps and good luck!

I used vaseline 20 years ago. My daughter just got one this week and the artist said not to use vaseline. He said to use an unscented hand lotion such as lubriderm and to try to keep it fairly dry....or pat it dry instead of rubbing. Also don't get shampoo on it. Apply the lotion about 5 times a day for 10-20 days.

Hi Jav, I was told to use body lotions. I put this on my 5 tats after taking a shower, and when i get up in the morning. If you make a habit of using lotion on your tats, they will always look like you just got them. Here's a little scret, when the weather changes to summer always put sun block on your tats. The rays from the sun will fade your tats. Do all of this, and your tats will be in great shape. A Friend.

I see some people put down vaseline, but don't, whatever you do! Don't put on vaseline. I put it on my first tatoo and it smeared. After 20 years, it was really smeary. Just over 1 year ago, I had a new one put right over the old one - Ouch! But, now I have a tatoo I can be proud of. Just use a nice creamy lotion and you'll be fine.

Use AQUAPHOR
(found in the lotion aisle of any drug store)
any other ointments like A&D OR NEOSPORIN will dry out your skin even more, and will dull your color.
If you have really really dry skin, i suggest getting Arbonnes Skin Conditioning Oil, and adding a couple drops of that with your daily lotion, sometimes i have to do that and it works GREAT!

A&D Ointment is what any tattoo shop will recommend. And it works like a charm. Put it on for an entire week to keep your tattoo from flaking or fading.

My last tat was very dry so I used baby oil on that spot and took bathes with baby oil to soften my skin. I know your a guy but hey.... Men need to be pampered every now and again too. Plus, women love soft skin.It also helps to keep the color looking bright. NEVER USE NEOSPORIN ON A TATTOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
