It means they made it deep enough and lasted longer than enough players to get prize money. If 800 people enter, they won't give money to everyone. So they make it so that the last 150 players or whatever "cash" or win money. It's an ascending prize latter and the last person standing wins a butt-load of cash.

The World Series of Poker is an annual event that takes place mainly at Harrah's Rio casino, with the main event final few tables at Binnion's (for historical reasons).

The event consists of thirty or so poker tournaments featuring different buy in amounts and different kinds of poker. The whole thing lasts about a month. The winner of each of the events gets a gold bracelet and of course a nice cash prize. The coveted main event is a $10,000 buy in event and in 2006 had over 8,000 entries making the grand prize an amazing $12.5m!

In most of the events the top 10% of players win a prize. The prize is a sliding scale that is generally quite top heavy. The winner will usually collect a significantly larger prize than anyone else, while people who barely make it in to the top 10% will probably collect two or three times their buy in. The higher you place, the more you win.

Cashing, simply means that you entered an event and survived long enough to win a prize. Clearly the first goal of any tournament player is to cash, the second goal is then to cash as much money as possible which generally requires you to make the final table. In the 2006 main event anyone who made the final table won at least a million dollars.

Cashes = finish in the money.

Usually that is about in the final 10% of all the players that started.

For example, 2006 WSOP main event:

8773 players, top 873 finishers paid.

So to "cash", you would have to finish #873 or better.

Simply put, you made it far enough to earn money. Doesn't matter how much you made, you made some money.
