6 years of engineer work after school, with a not so stellar GPA. I plan on pursuing an grad degree, have years of experience but these graduate schools seemingly hinge on GPA only! In the past six years I have acquired a wealth of knowledge beyond any recent graduate with a 4.0 GPA. does this not account for anything?

Try applying to the school that you got your BS from. They might look silly if they admit that an alumnus could not qualify for their own graduate program. It is worth a shot.

Times have changed I guess, because none of the engineers I've known have had any problem taking all the Masters level engineering courses they wanted at any one of our local universities. The companies pay for the courses, and all the universities are advertising all the time for engineers to take evening courses etc. However, if your talking about pursuing a PHd engineering degree and being paid by the university to teach graduate courses etc, that is a different story. First do well at the Master's degree and then take additional courses as desired in my opinion. The school may require you to maintain at least a B average.
