My University gave me a second chance instead of dropping me they put me on academic probation. I went last semester and made no friends and failed 3 classes its time to make some serious changes. I want to make at least one good friend, participate more in class (although being a little shy inhibits me), and get straight A's this semester. Does anyone have any plans that can help me achieve these goals because apparently my way is not working?

Wow. I'd suggest first to lower your expectations. There is a whole range of grades between failing and getting straight A's. It sounds to me like you might be having a hard time with the transition. You might go to your school counseling center to help deal with the stress.

As far as meeting people goes -- just talk to people. Sit by someone else who's alone at dinner and ask her what her major is. Ask the person sitting next to you in class if s/he did his/her homework. Talk to your roommate -- you know what to ask. Maybe you could get involved in a club with other students doing something you enjoy -- academic, religious, athletic, whatever.

There must be some sort of homework help place at your college. See if you can get some help getting organized.

As for talking in class, when you study, try to think of something to comment on in class the next day. Reward yourself for studying in any way you find enjoyable. Meet friends to study with in class. Really. I wish I'd done this more.

Anyway I'm all adviced out. I wish you luck. Don't let your shyness limit you.
