Cats can be very territorial animals. My cats do this and its because they are "surveying their vast domain."hehe. They feel like they are the alpha dog (or cat) and they are observing their people. Cats often feel safer higher up as well. They are higher then they usually are (and sometimes higher than people) which makes them feel powerful. In the wild, it would be an intimidation technique. Loving cats just want to be closer to us by becoming our height!

We don't live in "vertical space" as cats like to do. Have you never wanted to be in the top of a tree to survey all around. Maybe that's why humans climb the Eiffel Tower or the Statue of Liberty to get a "cat's eye" view of the world.
It is also probably instinctual from long ago in the cat's evolution. A small cat can go higher than a big cat who might want to eat it.

Cats are just very curious creatures and they like to see what is going on everywhere. Think of the wild cats though as well. Jaguars and leopards and tigers sit in trees. So it is their natural wild instinct to sit up higher. Cats also are very arrogant and proud animals and maybe they just want to feel like they are higher up and better than everyone else :P lol

All cats love to perch, preferably on ledges higher than a human could reach. Its a left-over instinct from their wild cat ancestors who had to climb up trees and sleep in them in order to be safe from bigger predators. Beleive me, if there's a high up ledge he/she can perch on, the cat will be there.

I have 2 cats, both like it when my dad holds them (he's tall). My younger one goes to the extreme of getting on the roof, I think she does it to tease my other cat (who's an old man) because he can't get up there. In general I don't know why theey like it, maybe because they like to see everything thats going on.

So they can stalk their prey - you! I had a cat that would hide and 'grab' us as we walked by. Then she learned to tap us on top of the head (while on top of things).
