Use an enzyme cleaner. I use Natures Miracle and it works great. The enzymes destroy the urine, therefore the smell. You are right to ask how to remove the smell because your dog will keep peeing in your house if you don't get the scent out completely. Covering it up with some other products, will not destroy the urine and that smell will keep coming back and so will your dog and pee there again and again. It will probably take a few applications to get it completely out, and that is the key. the scent has to be completely gone. And it does take a number of days for it to work, so don't expect overnight miracles. Reapply it a number of times. If it is in a non-traffic area, or a little out of the way, I put something like a laundry basket over it to give it time to work, and discourage my dog from going there. I just remove the basket, spray the rug, and put the basket back. And do that a number of times. Even if I can't smell it anymore, I still spray it once or twice more, just in case my dog can smell it. Consider yourself lucky if he/she peed on a floor, that is easier to get the scent out.
The vinegar mixture works relatively well, if you like the smell of vinegar! I don't think it works as well as Nature's Miracle, but that is just my opinion.

in a cup, put 1/4 white vinegar and 3/4 warm water. Pour over the area and let it soak in about five minutes, then soak up with paper towels or rags, stepping on them to get up the wetness.
Then follow this with Resolve Tough Stain Carpet cleaner, spraying liberally on the affected area. Let it sit a few minutes and soak it up too. Repeat the Resolve step if needed.
You don't have to use the whole water/vinegar mixture if the area of pee is not very big, just use enough to cover the visible peed in area of carpet.

At walmart they have this spray called Out or something......but it says cat spray and urine odor remover. It smells kinda like vanilla and it gets out all urine smell. I had a male cat that sprayedmy furniture and I used that stuff and te smell was gone. And if you have ever been to someones house that has cats you know the ammonia smell they can have. Try that stuff because I swear by it and I suggest it to everyone! Oh and also, I forgot that it takes out stains and the smell and makes it smell good! You can also use it on blood and vomit and poop and anything really!

No offense, but i know how to take care of a problem as in a dog peeing on a rug. When you catch him peeing on the rug say, "NO! bad dog!" and rub his nose in it, then smack him,(plus any other punishments.)
I always use fantastic, and then cover it with a different smells, as in for-breeze.
But if the stain doesn't come out, i don't know what ot tell you, just you show him what he had done wrong, and let him know it and he won't do it ever agian.

when fresh it is best to soak up covering with a towel, standing on to blot. If too late for that , soak area with white vinegar, blot as before, repeat. Improtant to remove urine deeply, if not it will wick to the surface. If not removed , urine will discolor carpet. Use white vinegar, it will not affect color Save your money on the commercial carpet treatments unless you find the smell of vinegar offensive and light a good smelling candle you allready have.
