It is vile, derogatory and disgusting and harkens back to the darkest period of American History.

Although its a word that was used to express feeling in a posotive way within the black community, its seen as a derogatory remark when used by whites, this started back in the day of plantations, it was used as a put down.
It is frustrating when you hear songs on the radio with different lyrics, you buy the album an then your racist if you sing the original version words. It shouldn't be the word thats the problem but the way that you use it.
You know your not even supposed to ask for black coffee after dinner, its now with cream or without, what a joke world were living in.

Singles and Dating? That just makes this question all the more interesting.

To state the ovbious, it's a slur word. I know that black people use the word, but in that context it's not designed to offend. When a person of another race says it, it's usually in a negative sense.
I do think however that it's been blown out of all proportion, the 'forbidden' word so to speak. I mean, my people have undergone centuries of enslavement, famine and occupation. In fact, part of our country is still a colony, but you don't here us exploding at the mere mention of a racial slur (although I admit it happens a lot less frequently), especially when it's not meant to offend

Black people are touchy by nature so they think they deserve everything since their past has suffered. Thus you get parent teaching there kids to be better and dont take sh*t from no one so they get this mentality that they are better and superior and over all get touchy when someone of no color says somethigng like that. I agree its wrong but they make such a huge deal about it and then the file racist charges agaisnt you or file a civil rights lawsuit on you. I say they have to grow up and they are just like anyone else. Hell if anything they need to get over it and mind there own business. Oh well society is part to blame as well. Over all I say its only wrong becuase you can get in trouble but any other race you can say whats on your head and they dont get ticked of. Sorry if I come of as a anit black guy but I am not I just hate the race card they pull. Ok well I say just respect everyone even if you dont like them. We do live in the usa and thus if you like to say it just promote it at your house.

it depends on the context really, a white thirty year old business woman shouldn't be walking around in the ghettos of los angeles saying, "howdy ******!" but among friends it should be okay. there is a lot of discourse built up around the word and one must realize that that discourse is there when speaking to others. but if you don't use the word with its negative connotations and the people around you understand that then there is no problem. ******* call ******* ****** and ******* call ******* ******* and that is okay because they are using the word in a different way. words are just words, its the meaning...

Why is ****** edited out, is ******* not derogatory?

If you value your life do not address a black person by using that term. it is a racist derogatory remark that is meant as an insult and a put down.
Any person who uses that word blk or otherwise is simply displaying their ignorance and deserves whatever happens to them as a result..
Terms like "cracker" and "White trash" don't have the power and hatred that this word conveys.

It is oppressive. It was a word that was widely used during the times of slavery. It was a derrogotory word. Although nowadays people seem to think that it is a good word it is still oppressive because it labels a certain group of people.

****** is a negative term used by many people, joking or not, but it's not the best selection of a word for someone you might think is not doing there best or messed up! I understand but don't say it unless you really know the person and never in public. :)

It's a demeaning racial word. I once saw a black man on a TV show on Showtime get his head smashed in because he called a black man who was working at his job that. And all I can say is that you wouldn't want that to happen to you!

It's very offensive to black people! Mostly because when they were still slaves that's what they were called. It was a condescending name then, and to say it now is just disrespectful. There is no reason to be like that when you could call them by their name.
