The reasons for getting a star tattoo vary from person to person, for some they represent an achievement or a success in life, for others it may have religious ramifications. We've heard stories where people have had star tattoos applied to symbolise the passing of a loved one, whilst others have them when a new child arrives.

One of the attractions of a star tattoo is that they are small, which often means that they can be applied much quicker. This means less pain, so they are particularly popular as a first tattoo. They can also be slightly cheaper than other tattoos as they are based on quite simple ideas

Early on sailors navigated by the stars at night and the north star became the symbol for finding ones way home. Once you know where the north star is you can point your ship in the right direction to get home. So the star became a symbol for finding ones way home or more symbolically even finding ones path in life. Therefore many sailors would tattoo nautical stars on their forearms as a good luck symbol in hopes of returning home.

The most common meaning of a star tattoo is as a Nautical symbol. It represents the North Star and a safe return to port (home).

and/or

The blue star tattoo legend frequently surfaces in American elementary and middle schools in the form of a flyer that has been photocopied through many generations, which is distributed to parents by concerned school officials. It has also become popular on Internet mailing lists and websites. This legend states that a temporary lick-and-stick tattoo soaked in LSD and made in the form of a blue star (the logo of the Dallas Cowboys is often mentioned), or of popular children's cartoon characters, is being distributed to children in the area in order to get them 'addicted to LSD'. In fact, LSD is not an addictive drug. The flyer lists an inaccurate description of the effects of LSD, some attribution (typically to a well-regarded hospital or a vaguely specified "adviser to the president"), and instructs parents to contact police if they come across the blue star tattoos.

Question
Can you please tell me what is the meaning of the multi star tattoo that many women have. R & B singer christina Milian has one one on her left hip (http://www.vanishingtattoo.com/tattoo/celeb-milian.htm) for an idea of what i'm talking about. I have seen this tattoo on several women (some celebs.) and could not find what the meaning is. Please email me @ EJones55@sc.rr.com. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Answer
Eric,

Honestly, there is no special meaning behind multi star tattoos. A lot of women choose this design for 3 simple reasons (1) It is an uncomplicated design and quick to render. (2) It is very small feminine. (3) It is easy to lay within a womens curves creating maximum effectiveness as a "Sexy" design.

There are a lot of designs that do have special meaning and there are even more that have absolutely no meaning except that which is special to the collector that wears it.

I hope this has been of some help. If I can be of any further assistance please let me know.

There are many different meanings behind stars, I think its different for everyone...

I come from a family of 5, so that automatically makes me favor them.

I have 3 nautical stars across my shoulders, I've always been into the punk scene, and they appealed to me as a kid, as they were the first thing I learned how to draw. I also liked the history behind them. Nautical stars in the yesteryears for sailors were said to mean strength and guidance, courage, etc. and I really liked that.

So those are my reasons for them!

My sister has a tattoo of a star. She said that it represents all of us, which are my other sisters and I. There are five of us, which represents 5 points! =)

For others, it might just be the image of it. Many people like stars and hearts!

nautical stars used to be done on sailors for guidance and a safe journey home. some people still get them for that meaning. but for some reason i think people are naturally drawn to stars in general. man's fascination wtih the sky and what's beyond us i think.

also, as to the urban legend about LSD mentioned above, WHO would waste good LSD on some bratty kids???
