Totally possible. Shelters are generally staffed by volunteers. They love animals, but they haven't always had much training. On top of that... with mix breeds, even vets have a hard time determining what's in the mix. The labels they get at shelters are basically just guesses based on the looks of a dog.

There is no way to know for sure unless the owner that turned the dog into the shelter also turned in purebred registration papers (unlikely). It's very likely that it is neither a boxer nor a great dane, but is a mixed breed combination that looks like one of them.
Since a boxer is so much smaller than a Great Dane, unless it's a puppy, it's impossible to mix them up. And the shelter staff would be able to distinguish a puppy from a full grown dog, just by looking at its teeth.

There is a big difference between a Boxer and a Great Dane. Boxer's are sort of a medium sized dog and Great Danes are Giant dogs. Maybe he could be a mix.

I think you should look up pictures of both and find out what it looks more like. People at animal shelters pretty much know their dogs. Also boxers dont have tails if they have been cut, and are a great deal smaller than great danes.

Yes. As someone who volunteers at a shelter - it's totally possible. We really can only guess. Especially since most mixed dogs are not crosses of two purebreds. Your vet should be able to tell you what breed(s) the dog may be.

It could absolutely be a different breed. The shelter 'guesses' unless they are given details on the parents when the pups are dropped off. I adopted a 'chow' cross and at her next Vet appt, he bust out laughing and lovingly pulled on the scruff of the neck -- the skin kept going and going -- she was a SharPei mix.

It a mixed breeds you never can tell. Judging by the pics I'd say she's a mix of any of this three: boxer, pit bull, german shepherd.. They can tell you anything in the shelter, theirs is only a guess too!

It is definetly possible. The dog we adopted was classified as a collie boxer mix but our vet said it is more likely that he is a pit/boxer mix but the way his head is shaped.

It's possible, but not likely. Boxers and Great Danes, are totally different in size, and don't look anything alike.
