Its the fault of whoever was in charge of the dog and the child and left them unsupervised when they already knew the dog had viscious tendencies, now because of one bad apple they are executing hundreds of innocent animals, I have foiur bull terriers and they are not aggresive in any way, they can't all be tagged with the same brush. What about all the akita attacks and bull mastiff attacks why are they not on the dangerous dogs act? and the authorities should not set up laws they have no intention of monitoring either, if pits are banned where are they suddenly finding all these dogs from? Any dog can kill if it wants to, labrador, collie, any breed. I think we should start a save the pit bull campaign!

Its100% Owner! It is ignorance of breed requirements and general dog behaviour and no real training that cause these tragedy's.
The reason the Pit bull is VERY dangerous in the wrong hands is because it was bred to fight. (The very thing that the tough macho owners like or even keep them for)
Well trained and looked after ALL dogs make good family pets.
It isn't just the pit bull types that make the head-lines though. It happens with the Guard breeds, particularly Rottweilers too.
Children need to be taught that dogs are not toys though. Often a dog gets blamed for biting a child but you never hear what the child did to provoke the dog. If its a little dog or a pup it may not do much damage but it still makes it a dangerous dog! Still the fault of the owner though.

I feel that you already know the real answer. It is the owners fault. There are so many factors that go into this. Vicious dogs are not born, they are made. I have only met sweet pit bulls, and the ones that are not were either trained as vicious gaurd dogs, abused, neglected, or forced to be a dog fighter. A respondsible owner would not allow any of this to happen to their dog, and if their dog had a behavior issue they would correct it, and if it is not correctable they would keep their dog AWAY from children or other dogs, which ever its behavioral problem is. They would keep their dog confined with no question. And pit bulls are not at the top of the dog attacks statistically. They just make the headlines EVERY time an attack happens. And sometimes they say pit bull, when that is not even the case. A lady i work with has a cocker/lab mix that bit someone and it was printed as a 'pit bull type dog attack" Which was insane to me. And i was also attacked by a golden retriever who left scars on my face. The pit bull problem is out of control, and it is because of the BAD owners, the media, and the ignorant public to believe otherwise.

I also agree that rotties, akitas, and other large "agressive" dog breeds get a bad name where it is not needed. With ANY dog breed it comes down to the owners and breeders.

watch this video, it makes me cry everytime i watch it:

Ok. There is something very basic that has been overlooked here.

Pitbulls were initially bred to fight other animals (bulls, dogs, boar.) Because of this, handlers would kill any dog who turned on them when they were pulling dogs apart. So while dog aggression is an issue, Pitbulls are very very rarely aggressive towards human beings. It was a trait that was "bred out" very early on.

Also - the ideas that "once a Pitbull gets a taste of blood...." or "if a dog attacks a dog, it's only a matter of time before it attacks a person. Come on! these dogs aren't vampires. Are you telling me that every dog who's ever had a marrow bone has been turned on to it's inner killer? Pitbulls don't have magical locking jaws, they don't "snap." They are strong, smart dogs who have been misused for their strength. There is a lot of money in dog fighting.

Those people should be held responsible. Anyone who's dog bites should never again be permitted to own another dog. Dogs that are socialized and trained rarely bite. Do you think that people who breed fighting dogs these days give a damn about socialization? Not likely.

I have owned three Pits / PitMixes. I am also a volunteer trainer at one of the few shelters in this country that hasn't turned it's back on these breeds. I have rehabilitated dogs that came from atrocious conditions.

These dogs ask for so little from us - and they give us their all. It's the best deal man has ever made.

SAVE THE PIT campaign? I'm on it buddy.

The owner. If harsher punishment were handed to the offending owners I think that attacks from dogs would become a thing of the past. As it stands we can just blame a certain breed and then we can ban the breed this way the owners do not have to take responsibility. I guess when all breeds have been banned maybe then someone will decide that perhaps it should have been the owners that should have been held accountable from the beginning.

Pit Bulls were never bred for to be human agressive THAT IS A FACT !!! wheather you beliave it or not . Animal agression is a compleatly different behavior triat think about it most dogs will bark at another dog in the yard but may not bark at a person dogs do know the difference between human and animal agression even if some ppl cant distiguish between them in recent times some ppl have bred the pit bull for human agression and yes its very stupid to do so and yes those particular animals should be delt with appropriatly but there are institutes that gage on a whole and aminals temperment pit bulls have cosistanly good temperments and one other thing just cause a dog has parents who where fighters or was a fighter itself dose not mean it will have ANY human agressive tendancies i know this goes in the face of everything you here in the media but i know it to be a fact first hand i have rescued fight dogs and they were exellent pets

The owner is responsible for their dog's behavior. Dogs were put on this earth for man to be helpers and protectors along with being loving, playful companions. Owning a dog is a big responsibility and you shouldn't own one if you don't have the time, knowledge, or energy to train and discipline them . They must be taken care of properly. Don't forget they ARE animals. You cannot neglect them and expect gentle behaviors. It takes time and work (as you would with your children).
Dogs cannot be predictable by the breed alone. I have had a variety of dogs including an American Bulldog & Rottweiler. I owned a Basset Hound that sadly had to be put to sleep at 8 yrs old from his aggression as he aged (after trying alternative treatments for some time). He was the only problem dog I have ever had. I think he had some health disorders that triggered the aggression. My friend has a 5# Miniature Pinscher that is MEAN and I am afraid of him!

All blame goes on owner and breeder. If the breeder breeds two dogs or even one dog witha bad aggression problem then it is the breeders fault if those dogs turn mean. If the breeding is of good genes, then it is the owner. A person who chains their dogs all day and or night, and does not treat them as a social creature that they are then it is the owner who is at fault and should be punished. The only why it is the dog is if the breeder did thier homework on the mating and the owner socialized the dog and took it through obedience and exersices and feeds it daily, then and only then is it the dogs blame if it goes bad. A good book to check out is Fatal Dog Attacks it really opens the eyes to what is behind the deaths of people by dogs. It shows most deaths are of children and even then most are of kids who go in or near kenneled/chained dogs. So I guess when it gets down to it who is at fault I would say the parents of the kids who get hurt. If people ans schools took more time in teaching children not to go near strange dogs like they teach them not to go near strange people they may never get hurt. but thats my opinon.

I am a proud American Pit Bull owner. My dog is a very loving dog and makes friends with everyone he comes in contact with even those uncomfortable around dogs. My dog never shows any vicious behavior unless I am playing rough with him, and even then he knows when I am done playing and calms down immediately. Pit Bulls were origionally bread to work well with humans when they were bread to be worker dogs. And Pit Bulls don't attack humans that often. The problem is that stupid people raise their Pit Bulls to be attack dogs and fighter dogs and don't control them. The other problem is that Pit Bulls are naturally stronger than most dogs and do more damage when they do attack. But to answer the question the owners should be held responsable for training their dog to be that way.

And no, the most attacks don't come from Pit Bulls...the most damaging attacks come from Pit Bulls.

I think 9 times out of 10 it's the owner. Or the person getting mauled. Of all the cases I have seen it's because the owner is into dog fighting. Not that a kid should be hurt in ANY way but usually they don't understand you can't just go upto any dog and pull it's ears or get in it's face etc.
