Yikes... I don't know that I can sum up the mission of the RCC in a couple of sentences. If I had to, I would say that the Catholic Church exists to spread the message of God through Jesus and help people live lives modelled after that of Christ. But again, that's just off the top of my head, and I was never very good at writing mission statements.

The prologue to the Catechism of the Catholic Church is probably the best direction I can give you: http://www.usccb.org/catechism/text/prologue.htm

Why are brothers and sisters (religious orders) important? Religious orders often have a specific mission of their own, such as education, care for the poor, missionary work, etc. Some people feel a calling to serve God in a very direct and specific way, both religiously and secularly. This is one way to do that.

this is a apostolic letter written by Pope Paul VI in 1975 expressing the Evangelization required by the Church in the modern world.

---2. This is precisely what we wish to do here, at the end of this Holy Year during which the Church, "striving to proclaim the Gospel to all people,"[3] has had the single aim of fulfilling her duty of being the messenger of the Good News of Jesus Christ - the Good News proclaimed through two fundamental commands: "Put on the new self"[4] and "Be reconciled to God."[5]

The mission of the church has always been to teach, to baptize, and to sanctify.

The sisters and brothers were most effective in passing along the teachings of Christ and the apostles, according to the authorative instructions of their modern day successors, who are the bishops.
