Cook was born in Marton, which eventually became a part of the new town of Middlesbrough which was just two farm houses and a field until the railways came along.

To this I will add a story, before he sailed the world he sailed out of Whitby ferrying coal from Newcastle to London. Obviously to make the journey successful they had to return with an imported load.

Alum was very important to the dyeing trade and was found in great quantities in Yorkshire along its North coast. Dont ask me how someone discovered this but if you bake alum in stale human urine and leave it for 6 months, it will make a fastener for dye.

The ale houses in London used to gather "expended ale" and sell it to be shipped back north. It was mutually beneficial, it was ballast for the boats and a tiny extra earner for the vitners.

My only observation is this shows that yorkshiremen have have been taking the piss out of Londoners for hundreds of years.

In Middlesborough.
Middlesbrough is a large town in The North East Of England, and is the principal location in the borough of Middlesbrough. Historically in the North Riding of Yorkshire, in 1968 the town became the centre of the county borough of Teesside, which was absorbed by the non-metropolitan county of Cleveland in 1974. In 1996 Cleveland was abolished, and the Middlesbrough borough became a unitary authority, within the ceremonial county of North Yorkshire.
