Sounds great! Everyone should love skiing too!

Something in the industry we say is "maximum speed, minimum terrain." What you need to do is get on the bunny hill and practice practice practice. When you're wholly competent there, move onto the blues. The best way to get all of this done is to hire a ski instructor and have them give you an hour lesson. Ski instructors know how to get the most out of you and get you to the next level. I would even encourage you to join a weekly ski school (that's how I learned, and it's the best way in my opinion).

Since you really like to ski and you know your limits, be comfortable with who you are! Skiing is not enjoyable when you overstep your abilities (say on a black diamond run). I've been there! Go skiing and enjoy quality time with yourself, working on your skills. That way you can eventually keep up with your friends. It takes a lot of practice and patience with yourself. You can still make plans to meet friends at lunch and at the end of day and share stories about what runs you skied, etc. You're still part of the group and you still get to share in your adventures together.

Go, and get off the bunny hill.

The best way to get better at skiing is to challenge yourself and get off the bunny slope. Try a little harder terrain, not black diamond, but go for the blue, I think that learning on a little steeper terrain is easier.

As for people being better than you, everybody has to start somewhere. Also, you may e surprised at who is good and who isn't
