I've just started learning how to drive but found it really hard to get the hang of it because you need to put so little pressure on the accelerator.

Are there any tips you can give me for when you first start out?

Take your shoes off. Really, it makes a huge difference.
You will feel the pedal directly (well, thru your socks, anyway) and you can have much more sensitivity of the throttle's response.

I have a car with a manual transmission and I drive with just my socks. I can feel the clutch much better, when it grabs and when it slips, and the same with the accelerator pedal. Driving without shoes is *not* illegal, contrary to popular opinion. (And it helps air out smelly feet, too. Too bad about the passengers.)

You can get better gas mileage with this technique: drive as if you have an egg between your foot and the accelerator and drive as if you are trying not to break it. You will drive much more smoothly and your mileage will increase.

The only other way to get high mileage is to use cruise control, but that's only for highways.

It just takes practice. I've been driving for 9 years, and even between my 2 vehicles I own I still spin tires every now and then if I haven't driven my truck for a while as it has so much more power than my car. It just takes time to adjust to how much pressure you need in order to get going and not spin the tires, and how much pressure to use on the brakes without getting whiplash.
