Most here are correct, yes there is Emergency leave, yes it has to be immediate family, also it will still count against your saved leave days, if you have none they will normally allow you to go into negative leave days, also ACS (Army Community Service) will hook up the Service member with an Emergency loan (interest free) for travel if need be.

Yes, they do give you leave for a death in the family. The Red Cross has to be notified and they will verify the death whether it is with the hospital, funeral home, etc. My husband was active duty AF when my Mom passed away, he actually received his own Red Cross notification because he was the First Sgt, he had them call his CO and he was on the next plane from California to Michigan.

Hi, I just went through this personally. If the death is the military members IMMEDIATE family (brother, sister, parents not grandparents, aunts, or uncles) the member can recieve up to one week of emergency leave and can take extra time as annual leave if the members supervisor approves such leave. The member is NOT granted emergency leave for the death of the spouses immediate family members. My grandfather recently passed away and although the AF paid for my ticket to my grandfathers funeral, my huabdn and 3 year old son were not allowed to go. I could've taken my son but paid for it but my husband was not granted emergency leave.

Yes, but typically its the Red Cross which gets things moving for this. If you have a death in the family have themcontact the Red Cross. The Red Cross will then contact your unit and the next thing you know you will granted emergency leave and even an advance in pay if necessary.

Im sorry for your loss.

Yes, if it is a close relative like brother sister, mother, father, sometimes grandparents. Occasionally also the spouses family, like spouses mother. If the servicemember is deployed to a combat zone however, they only get R&R once during their yearlong deployment, so if they have already come home and a family member dies, i think it is dependant on the unit if that soldier is allowed to return home again. From what i understand, you are only allowed 1 time home during your 1 year tour though. I could be wrong.
