My granddaughter, now 17, had some very crooked teeth, i.e., some were at 90 degrees to her good teeth. As her parents could also not afford braces, she instead got an "appliance". It's something she wears at night. I don't know the cost, but for sure it's a lot cheaper than braces. It's been a few (2 or 3) years now but those teeth are now lined up with the others. She also goes to the doctor (either dentist or orthodontist - I don't know which) for adjustments, like she would if she had braces. Because this child is quite aware of her appearance she has been quite diligent in wearing this appliance at night and it has paid off.
Hope this helps.

My mother had the same issue with my teeth when I was small, starting about the age of 9 or so, my teeth were growing in very crooked. Unfortunately, my mother was a single mom and very well could not afford to pay for the braces that my dentist was pushing for. Unless it is going to cause a significant change in her dental health, don't worry too much about it. I survived, crooked teeth and all and didn't get my braces on until I was 23. I've had them on now for a year and a half and I'm glad I waited anyways because had I had put braces on before my wisdom teeth came out, that would've created a whole other mess. She'll do it when she's ready and she'll understand your situation later on.

With how judgemental America is, it is almost required these days to have braces. Straight teeth seem to be one of those things that seem to matter more now than they ever did before. My take on it is if her teeth are not that bad, (no gaps, not sideways, no major overbite etc) then if you're comfortable with them and she doesn't have low self esteem because of her teeth then it's okay not to get them. If they are turned funny ways, have holes in between them, some longer than others etc. I'd say you need to get them for her. Kids will find anything to make fun of someone about, but if they are not that bad, then I wouldn't worry about that being a problem.

$10k for braces is quite extreme. Go for the second opinion.
I have heard of $10k per pair especially in Florida and California
in certain complicated cases. Also, look into the eHealthPlus
membership (search for orthodontists by zip code) to see how
you can save in addition to your insurance coverage.

Going to a dental school is a great idea. Also, shop around. Even if you have to drive further, it'd be worth it to save money. If her teeth aren't too bad, I don't know why they'd be $10,000 anyway.
And of course, if you're not sure, get a second opinion!
