I would say about 10-12 yrs. old typically. However some of us never stop being Barbie fans, I'm 22 and I still love Barbie!

There is no age limit, when there is something else to take its place it happens, I know some 16 year old who still play with there dolls they say they aren't but they wont give them away. I'm 51 and still have my first teen doll and still love to make clothes for her with the excuse that I'm designing an outfit for one of my daughters.

I guess it depends on the kid and the type of doll. Now those bratz dolls are pretty popular and older kids like them because there funky and trendy. Check with the parents as to what sort of things the kids like so you can be prepared and don't suggest something stupid.
