I'm an amusement park fan, so I'd start with all the parks on the 5- Six Flags, Knott's, Disneyland, Sea World. Universal Studios too. You're never too old for Disneyland if you're from out of state. Go to Venice beach, the Chinese theatre, the observatory is open now again...
Is there any particular type of thing your friend likes? Architecture, nature, etc?

i totally recomend the grove at farmer's market. its a totally cool place. the atmosphere there is just so romantic and nice. the shopping there is comparable to anywhere else in the US but the feel of the place is wonderful. go in the evening or at night and take the free tram that moves through the whole grove area. beautiful.
another place i felt where u could really experience LA is santa monica. the beach seems to always be crowded and and roads around there seem to always be full of cool cars.
the theme parks are generally similar to the other disney or universal parks in other parts of the world. if u have to choose between universal studios and disneyland, i'd suggest universal. cheaper and i felt it was more value for money. just remember to get discount coupons in those free tourist guides which u can request from the LA tourism website. if i'm not wrong, these discount coupons are everywhere actually. from hotels, hostels.... disney doesnt have discounts though.

Depends on what his interests are.
Star struck: Hollywood. Tours of any of the studios. Tickets to see a taping of a tv show.
Excitement junkie: The amusement parks. South-Central. (Just kidding.)
Culture vulture: The Getty, any of the museums, Disney concert hall. The newly refurbished Observatory. The Huntington Library. The LaBrea Tar Pits.
Out-doorsie: Griffith park, the beach, anywhere in the mountains.
It will rain during some of your trip. Plan alternative indoor trips.

If he loves art, take him to the Getty Center or the LA County Museum of Art. For some shopping and dining you can go to the Grove at Farmer's Market. You can go to the Griffith Observatory to get a great nighttime view of the city.
