If they are still very young try singing a song that is easy for them to learn. Try something like
The toys go in the bin.
The toys go in the bin.
High Ho The Derrio.
The toys go in the bin.
Or
The Books go on the shelf. Be creative. And sing it to them while it is clean up time. They will learn the words themselves as well as where things belong!!!

First of all don't force them the be organized, we all are different...
Teach them that every time they take off their dirty clothes to place them in a basket, to put together the socks that way there were no missing sock when you wash clothes... Pick up toys, books after playing... Play only in an specific place not around the house.. Pick up thier stuff after doing their home work .. ALso plan what you want for them to be organized and start teching them little by little that way they will start being organized !!! GOOD LUCK

FLYLady on the flylady.net has a whole manual on teaching kids how to be organized. it helps if you do the adult version and get organized yourself.

Show by example. I started with my son a couple months ago when he was 16months and picking up his own toys. We have crates for each thing.. one for stuff animals, one for books, one for his dinosaurs, one for cars etc. He knows where they go now. With my daughter, I bought small rubbermaid containers that she can seperate her toys, one for barbie dolls, one for barbie clothes etc. Also, have some that hold her art materials etc. She is 9 and usually does a very good job. Its gonna take time but making it easier for them will make it easier for you - like buying seperate containers for different things. You can also have them decorate the containers with markers putting the name of what they hold on the top. Make it fun! Good Luck!

Work *with* them, don't expect them to do it alone and do it over and over. It isn't easy and takes great patience with some kids and others are just born organizers.
