Is this some kind of disorder that can be cured? And no- he is not hungry for those of you with sarcasm. I keep telling him no and taking away the toy, but I can't put him in a room with no toys or plastic!

He's part mexican, so what if he likes the tabasco sauce and garlic? That would be just my luck....

Obviously he has a need that needs to be fulfilled by chewing, so give him something he is allowed to chew on. Some children take in information through their mouth, which is normal in infants, but most children grow out of this "mouthing" by the time they are 18months. To help, you should be giving him chewy foods at mealtimes (beef jerky, granola bars, fruit chews, etc.) so that he can exercise those chewing muscles. For many children who mouth objects, this is a sensory need. Their mouth needs this kind of pressure input, so they chew on everything. Other things that really help are having objects that he can chew on available and in ready supply, such as teething rings (the kind that vibrate are the best ones, they provide more sensory input), plastic tubing (you can purchase it from the hardware store), and chewy bracelets (you can purchase from www.abilitations.com). Generally, as children age, they begin to lose this need to chew on everything, however, if it goes beyond that, and he is also eating non-edible things (called Pica) seek help from your peditrician.

i would place a couple of toys on the ground and use garlic not hot sauce like the first lady, u want to teach a lesson not burn his mouth, but anyways put garlic on the toys, not his hand, just rub the garlic all over it, eventually he will see that the toys dont' taste good anymore and would probably stop this habbit, i hope that this helps u out a little bit :o)

Your son may have an oral fixation problem. This would be why he is chewing on everything. A friend of mine has an eight year old daughter actually diagnosed with this condition. She still chews on everything. You could ask your peditrician what you could do.

Everytime he chews on a toy, take it away, if he doesnt learn soon he will have no toys left to chew on. Give one toy back every day that he doesnt chew on one.
