why not discount the item right there in the store for corn's sakes? I personally avoid stores and sales involved in these "rebates" as I think it's some trick to get you to pay the higher price then offer some feeble excuse why you're not eligible for the rebate.

I think often (and I am guilty of this) customers forget to mail in the rebate. So, the store can get you to buy an item, because you think it is a good deal since you can get a rebate, then they never really have to give you that rebate, when you lose the receipt or just forget to mail it in, in the time they require. I agree, they should just give you the discount at the point of sale.

Most mail in rebates are NOT offered by the store. They are offered by the manufacturer. The trick is not to claim you are not eligible for the rebate. It is that most people never mail in the form.

Not only do the manufactures get to claim they never got the rebate or find some reason to claim you are not illegable, they also now have all of your contact information (that you provided to them to get the rebate) so now they can sell your name to other interested parties and you get harrassed in the mail or on the internet
Some companies pay BIG BUCKS for a list of names of people who bought computers so that they can market crap to them.

You're right it is sort of a trick. First of all, they do it because many people never mail the rebate in. Secondly, they can delay the rebate so from an accounting purpose they get to keep money in their bank longer (and get interest and such).
