Jesus' last name is not Christ first and foremost. Christ means anointed one. Anyway, no one was called a Christian until the first church came about in the book of Acts where the Holy Spirit came in and fell upon everyone and they began to speak in other languages(tongues) Those group of people wanted others to know that they didn't follow after pagan gods but were followers after the True Messiah, the Anointed One Jesus Christ. Christ comes from the Hebrew word Kristos which in Greek is X and that's also why you sometimes see Xmas. I thought I'd throw that in there extra for ya. Love Ya!

Depends on what you mean by "Christian"? Today's mainstream Christianity is virtually unlike anything in the past. It's roots started with Martin Luther, sola scriptura and really got going with Darby's rapture ideas of the early 19th Century.

Catholicism really took shape in the fourth century, after Constantine became a Christian and melded Pauline Christianity with some Roman pagan ideas.

In the first 100 years of Christianity, there were many types of Christians. Paulines (who evenutally won), Essenes, Jewish Christians (likely the original apostles and James), Marcions, etc.

Essentially though, Christianity was begun by Paul, who created Christianity drawing on the legend of Jesus and other pagan myths common in the area. A few decades later, a few biographies were written about Jesus for the Churches founded by Paul. Paul, himself, only reported a simple hymn about the life of Jesus in his writings...he had no other details.

Those biographies eventually became the Gospels, and soon four were chose as THE four books (in 180 AD, by a scholar who wanted four books because their were four directions of the wind). Those authors never met Jesus, most likely, if he even existed.

The first secular reference to Christians was probably in 96 AD by Josephus. Then in the beginning of the first century a few other Romans discussed this odd new religion.

Thanks about it. Some will dispute my interpretation of the facts, but the fact are there notheless.

Okay, but it's a long story!

During Jesus' lifetime (and before and after it), there were three main sects of Judaism--the Essenes, the Sadducees, and the Pharisees. Jerusalem was under Roman law, as it had been under Greek law before that. Many Jews and other non-Romans were oppressed and unhappy with the social and political situation.

Jesus began teaching others how to be able to live the Jewish faith and stand up to oppression without using violent means. He helped heal the sick and encourage the downtrodden. Unfortunately, some members of the other Jewish sects saw him as a threat to their power, and some others were afraid that his actions would bring the attention of the Roman government, who would subsequently massacre all the Jews.

The leaders of the Pharisees attempted to trap Jesus into saying treasonous things against the Roman government, then, later, went to the governor, Pontius Pilate, and accused Jesus of claiming he was the king of the Jews and was going to incite rebellion. Though Pilate at first tried to make them seek justice from their own king, Herod, he eventually agreed to their demands because the Jews were forbidden by law to perform their own executions.

Jesus was crucified, but his followers continued to meet and to seek out new people to whom they spread his word. Some of the leaders of the group preached to other Jews, converting them to followers of Jesus, while others preached to pagans, converting them first to Abrahamic faith and subsequently to followers of Jesus. After a while, these followers began calling themselves "Christians," meaning followers of Christ, in the belief that Jesus had been the Messiah promised in the Jewish texts (Old Testament).
