A couple of years ago, something like that happened to me. The panhandler said that he wasn't going to lie; he was alcoholic and needed some liquor. I didn't have anything on me to give, but a friend of mine gave him enough for a half-pint of cheap whiskey. She said that he looked so close to death (which was true) that he might as well go out happy.

I'd probably look up the addresses of a local Alcoholics Anonymous meeting place and a homeless shelter and give them to the guy.
Even if it doesn't help him, if he went to the AA meeting it could show others on the edge what could happen to them if they let their addiction get the best of them.
It's easy to laugh at something like that but it's really a tragedy.

There's nothing unhealthy about needing a beer; it doesn't necessarily mean you're an alcoholic. If the guy looked at least as poor as me, I'd give him something.

I'd go buy a carton and sit under a shady old tree and drink it with him/her, but if they tried to run with those beers a swift clip under the ears and a lesson in sharing.

I think it's funny, and if I was drunk walking around I probably would. But think about, just because they're being honest doesn't make it okay. Give your money to some bum who's going to blow it off on alcohol to drown his sorrows? Your not helping him. Your basically encouraging his actions that have led him to be homeless.

Should I contribute to and sponsor an unhealthy lifestyle (alcoholism) which won't get any better with more drinking?
No.
If he's hungry and would like to come to lunch with me on the other hand, that would be fine.

Yeah I would. At least he's honest, unless he buys a suit with that beer money.
