As little as possible - they're pack animals and therefore need to socialise and interact with others ie you.
If you work and do have to leave your dog alone during the day, make sure it has enough food and water and perhaps leave a radio on the keep it company - mine loved radio 4!

i used to leave my dog for about 8 hours a day 4 days a week. i had someone who would come walk/play with him in the afternoons for an hour. he's a big energetic boy, and this just wasn't enough exercise and stimulation for him, so now he goes to daycare two days a week. basically just keep in mind that when you are not there, it's hard on your dog. they don't like to be alone. if you have to leave him while at work, try to get someone who can come by and give him a walk. there is no real limit, but the less he is alone, the happier he will be.

well it depends on the age of the dog i would say as little as possible if its a pup i wouldn't leave it at all i have a dog and i go shopping in to town obviously i can not take hI'm but im not gone more than a couple of hours.
You should not have a dog and be out at work all day its not fair on the dog and an animal should always have access to food and water when you do leave it for any length of time

Indie girl has the right answer, plus its been proved that dogs suffer from depression when they are left alone !.
Personally i think its quite cruel to keep a dog and leave it alone for long periods of time !.
Get another dog to keep it company or leave it with a relative or friend if your away from it for long?.

I'd say no more than 8 hours a day. This is ok as long as you give your dog plenty of exercise before and after it is home alone. For example, you should walk your dog 2-3 miles before leaving it home for 8 hours. This calms him and tires him out so he doesn't wreck your house while you are gone.

As little as possible. I follow my Dad all over the place and sleep at his feet when he's on the PC. He's out just now and doesn't know I can get out of the cage. I have a secure cage or indoor kennel, I ate the BT landline and Dad was seriously dischuffed. I would say because we are a social lot, as little as possible. When Dad goes out and Mum is at work, they leave Radio 2 on and I know all the songs now. I recognise them when they are on TV. The noise helps me keep calm when I am on my own. I need lots of walking though, if they are leaving me for a few hours. I have to empty my bladder and bowels before they go.

I agree with MJ. A lot questions come up, so there's no telling what the correct answer may be. I know that I have one dog whose a miniature pinscher and I won't leave her by herself for more than 4 hours per day if needbe.

It depends. Is your dog a people person? if so then she probably needs a lot of attentiion so you shouldn,t leave her alone a lot. Either way all dogs need attention so it shouldn't be for too long.

well it really depends on how old the dog is if its like a puppy then you shouldnt really leave it if its a older one then you could probably leave it for about a week but make sure that you have someone watch the dog or somthing and they should play with the dog and everything soo yeh i hope this helps you in anyway
