Warfarin sodium can cause major or fatal bleeding. Bleeding is more likely to occur during the starting period and with a higher dose (resulting in a higher INR). Risk factors for bleeding include high intensity of anticoagulation (INR>4.0), age >65, highly variable INRs, history of gastrointestinal bleeding, hypertension, cerebrovascular disease, serious heart disease, anemia, malignancy, trauma, renal insufficiency, concomitant drugs (see PRECAUTIONS), and long duration of warfarin therapy. Regular monitoring of INR should be performed on all treated patients. Those at high risk of bleeding may benefit from more frequent INR monitoring, careful dose adjustment to desired INR, and a shorter duration of therapy. Patients should be instructed about prevention measures to minimize risk of bleeding and to report immediately to physicians signs and symptoms of bleeding (see PRECAUTIONS: Information for Patients).

You were told the truth. Coumadin and Warfarin are taken to prevent blood clots hence a stroke; yes, it also is a rat poison.

These drugs are "blood thinners" and are used in people with certain types of heart failure or circulation problems. The dosage is monitored and controlled. The same compounds are used in rat poisons. The rat eats the bait and basically bleeds to death internally. The dosage per kilogram is much higher, based on weight, in the rat than in the human. You wouldn't take rat poison to thin your blood but you would take coumadin if you needed it.

What is does is thin the blood for people who are prone to clotting, stroke and arterial plaque.

It does have to be managed by a doctor to maintain correct dosage. It is not rat poison. It is a pharmaceutical drug.

Good for a person?? What drug is? It is meant to prevent a life-threatening problem from becoming a bigger problem. If your doctor says take it, they do not prescribe it lightly. Follow the doctor's advice unless you want to die sooner from congestive heart failure or stroke.

They are blood thinning medications and should be taken only by the advice of a doctor. People taking theses meds. need to have their INR levels checked frequently, in case the blood gets too thin and could cause severe bleeding.
As for rat poison, it does kill them by means of over-thinning the blood causing them internal bleeding.

It thins your blood and is supposed to help prevent strokes and blood clots

It's true it's also used in rat poison and it causes them to bleed internally because their blood is so thin.
