There is nothing unusual here. The dealer puts the car on the lot and prices it with maximum profit in mind. Then if the car does not sell, he advertises it at a reduced price. You can still negotiate down from the advertised price, and you don't have to go for the first deal that comes your way. I have saved thousands of dollars purchasing cars by making low offers and then negotiating a final price, usually well below the advertised price. They will tell you no, they will tell you they are losing money, but when you get up to leave they will come after you to make the sale. The moral of this story is that they need to sell the car worse than you need to buy it, so you are the one who is in charge.

Of course it is, but so long as you have no part ex or need finance you can always negotiate on the price and if its advertised a £5k I would be looking at paying £4.600, but I'd want a full service and mot, also make sure the cam belt is changed and all the tyres are good, push them for everything you can get. Never worry about not getting the deal you want, there are plenty more cars out there, so don't be afraid to walk away.

The price they ask is not important. Research similar cars and selling prices. Find a price you think is fair based on other sales. Have the car checked over completely. Tell them what you will pay. If they want to sell you have a deal. If not, keep looking. Car salesman are in business and you shouldn't expect them to sell at cost. Above all you want a good car at a fair price.

Is for it being a trick? Other people have sales to attract business. Why not car dealers?

O YES, it is the oldest trick in the book. But try 2 knock them down abit. What u should remember.
1, U r going 2 b riped off
2, How far u let them rip u off
The car dealer is out 2 make money some r more greedier than others. Shop around & find a deal that is right 4 u.

Yes.I did they same thing.Saw the sale price on the Internet and got to dealership and the price was higher and I told the sales man, then he said oh that fine OK I haven't seen that yet this AM and gave it to me for Internet price. But if I didn't have the luxury of seeing this on th web and just went out there I would have been stuck with the sticker price or he would have let me think I was getting a good deal or they were being nice by lowering the price just for me. And by this good deed I would become a return customer.

I am surprised that no one mentioned the "bait and switch" tactic of the dealerships running a low advertisement price on a strip down model [car with no options] only to go on their lot and see all the glorified models with all the options [read: markups] included. The salesman then tells you all the low cost models were sold.

It is all a big scam I say, "eliminate the middle man!" they have been price gouging for years...

Why ever pay retail?

Actually I'm surprised to hear the dealer dropping price at the moment. Price of used cars has increased this month dramatically. Cars are also selling well on the forecourt too.

I doubt you'll get much leeway if he's dropped it by a bag of sand already. If you tried the haggle with me on that I'd just go back inside as you wouldn't be worth dealing with.

of course it is. take some one with you thats knows what there doing. Other lame things they may tell you, or all. include:
-I know the car well, i bought it back of a customer i sold it to a few years ago
-i have one of these at home
-I was going to keep this car for myself.
lololololololol... complete Tw**s
Also, you should know that the worst place to buy a car from is Auction.. full of tat with dodgy history.. and is exactly where dealers buy their stock from. If he is selling the car for £5000, he has paid no more than £2500 to £3000. If you want a shi**er buy one from auction yourse;f and save 2K. ps.. i bet the mileage was higher than he put in the advert as well wasn't it ???

It's a trick. It may be legal in your country but not in the US. Test drive it and make them an offer if you like it. Then the negotiating will begin. NEVER PAY THE ADVERTISED ASKING PRICE.

I asked a sales person about this. It's like giving you a discount for looking online. Not everyone has Internet access and they will have to pay the higher price.
