Some individuals may qualify for a surgical procedure called hip resurfacing. There aren't really any truly effective, long-lasting treatments for hip OA except the surgical ones although you will probably encounter those who suggest food supplements, special diets, exercise programs, and other alternative treatments. Some of them may seem to work for some people for awhile but many of them also belong in the category of "quack" medicine. Some, such as glucosamine/chondroitin supplements have been studied and do give enough people at least temporary relief (and they are harmless) that they might be worth a try if you don't mind the cost.

If your surgeon is recommending a hip replacement for you, then no. It means that your OA has reached the point that your bones are rubbing together, with nothing cushioning them.

Further, there is a reason to NOT delay this surgery. Once your cartilage has worn completely away, or worn completely away at any spot, the only protection that the end of your bone has is the synovial tissue. When that wears through, synovial fluid can get into your bones. Now, every time that you move that joint, your synovial fluid will be forced further and further into the bone (remember that bone is porous) and that will cause cysts to form in your bone. Too many cysts or cysts that are too large will mean that your remaining bone no longer has the structural integrity to hold an implant.

I had hip replacement almost a year ago. I don't mean to scare you, although I am getting better now, it was an awful experience. I got an infection(MRSA); had to have the original replacement re-done. That hip dislocated twice!!! I had my last(and final) surgery 6 weeks ago. This time, it is better.

Weigh all your options. Be sure you have a good doctor.

I am getting my life back to normal. The pain before surgery was awful. Now, I am pain free----most of the time.
Good Luck

A hip replacement is an elective procedure - so the alternative is to do nothing - get injections - or just be in pain...Good Luck!

The price of Hip replacement surgery is very low in India as compared to USA, UK and Canada. My cousin also got her hip replacement surgery in India through the forerunners healthcare .She is more than very happy with the results. She is totally pain free now. She just paid 25% of the amount she was quoted in USA and is all praise for this forerunners healthcare company.

Forerunners Healthcare is very famous in India. I read a lot about them in the Newspapers and magazines. I have read a lot of their patient stories also. They arrange financing for USA, Canadian, UK and other international patients who plan to have surgery abroad for low price, as all joint surgery is not covered by insurance in USA or by NHS in the UK. They also have photos pasted of their International patients. You can checkout their website. There are huge cost savings. As a doctor I personally believe that your surgery can be easily handled in India, as the quality of healthcare available In India is simply best in the world. The surgeons are USA/UK trained and facilities are 5 star.

Hope this helps.

Hello =)

LOL Yes.....you can always try my alternative....... Not being able to walk without excruciating pain. Living most of my life in a rocking chair....using an electric scooter, and walking with a cane....oh, yes, and becoming addicted to opiate pain killers....

That's pretty much the alternative......but it sounds good to me.

Namaste,

--Tom
